WXGA or WSXGA??

post #1 of 36

Which screen would suit my needs? I'm not a gamer and I'll only be word processing, net surfing and watching the occasional DVD. No major graphics programs. Also, do I really need the 128MB DDR ATI's MOBILITY™ RADEON X300 PCI Express x16 Graphics card?

Thanks!

It depends on how you like your screen to look

WXGA = 1280x800

WSXGA =1680x1050

It will make images look sharper
The decision really lays with individual opinions

So the WSXGA is basically higher resolution?

yup, I personally like the WSXGA better, and if no gaming you won't but if you can I would just in case you ever do start to, at least you can play most games at medium setting or so

So if I am not a gamer, it really doesn't matter?

well, hear out a guy who owns a WXGA laptop and whose brother owns a WSXGA laptop.

WXGA is easier on the eyes, it really is, well, at least when dealing with text. Since the area of the screen is the same, it just has less pixels covering it, each pixel is BIGGER, thus making everything bigger and a tad less sharp, however it is by far not a blur of colors. I like WXGA because its easy to look at, and easy to work with text because it is bigger and easier to find what you are looking for. However, the downside is that you can only have so much stuff on the screen at any given time and have it be visable. For instance WXGA is wide enough so you can have a word document open, and have your AOL buddy list right next to it so you can see as your buddies get on and off as you type your paper. However, if say you want 2 word documents side by side, space can get a little bit tough.

WSXGA on teh other hand makes thinks look a bit sharper (images and movies) but it also makes text smaller, so you might yourself reaching for the Ctrl + (plus) all the time to make things bigger-looking. I am not saying its a bad thing, it just depends on how you like it. Granted since it has more pixels, your battery life will be a bit shorter than on a WXGA screen.

my best advice is go to Best Buy or something and look at both types, see what you feel more comfortable on

Thanks for taking the time to explain everything. I'll probably take your advice and see both in person before I order.

wsxga is waaaay too small, i cant read anything, i cant imagine 1900 res on a 15 inch screen. guess thats another question how big is the screen? 15.4 inch i would go with 1200x 800. That is like the correct size for a monitor 15.4 inches. I've owned a 1680 resolution dell and it was waay to small i returned it. I like to create web pages and 72 dpi at 1680 res is really really bad. Of course you could always set it on 1200 but it would look really blurry. All the laptops in the store that are 15.4 inches are pretty much all 1200, if you think thats too big then get wsxga. even 1900x1200 on a 17 inch laptop is too small. think about it, 1900x1200 is made for a 24 inch monitor, i would imagine 1600 would be for a 20 wide monitor. imagine that on a 15.4 shrunken down, its like text for mice.

If you are asking about an Inspiron 6000 then DO NOT GET THE WXGA. Its not an UltraSharp screen like the WSXGA is, and its viewing angles, contrast, and brightness are HORRIBLE. I saw one and it looks worse than a 5 year old laptop screen.

It's also gonna depend on the size of the screen. For a 17" screen I can see WXGA as beeing too big and on a 14" WSXGA being too small. You're best bet would be to go to a store that sells lots of laptops and take a look at the different resolutions and sizes and see what you like best.

I've got this Z71V with the WSXGA screen while my dad has a D810 with a WXGA screen. I can say that I prefer the higher resolution. I do a bit of webpage work along with photoshop and it's really nice to have the extra space to spread everything out.

Personal preference. WXGA on a 15.4" has text waaaaay too big for me. Consider that 10.6", 12" and 14" screens all use WXGA as well. Comparing with desktop monitors isn't fair, since you usually sit farther from them than laptop screens.
post #13 of 36
that depends on your setup. i sit very far away from my laptop screen when its docked. (i use and external wireless mouse/keyboard)

It sounds like one is too small and the other is too big. Which one would be best for basic functions and maybe some phot editing? I'll be doing more web surfing and word processing than anything. I'll be using it for school and all the major stuf I need to do will be done on my desktop.

Just so I'm straight, WSXGA is the high res. screen? I don't want to strain to see the text. Will that be a problem?

Would the WUXGA be good?
post #17 of 36
i got the dell's 9300 highest display w/ truelife. i have to tell you man, there is no substitute. the screen is gorgeous. i would never trade it for a screen of lesser res. the graphics are crisp and clean, as long as you have decent eyesight or have any type of correction lenses, there is no squinting or any problems of that sort. i can kinda see the sparkles that people are talking about, but honestly, you never notice them ever unless you are specifically looking for them. im not even sure if i have sparkles cause the screen looks so amazing i can find no faults. best money ive ever spent. imo, the display is what you are gonna be looking at the most, so spend the $$, and yes, bigger is usually better.

edit: and nothing beats being able to view 3 web pages at once with room to spare. the viewing space is just something words cannot describe. this screen is better than porn. (porn ON the screen? i dont think my dear heart can take it)

As mtbaird says you can set the dpi to higher than 100% on WSXGA to get the fonts bigger onscreen but on some application it will still look small. Basically you may find yourself constantly fiddling with the dpi and font size settings with WSXGA. I have a laptop with SXGA and when it's on my lap and my face is about a foot away, it looks fine. When I have it on my desk and my face is like 2 feet away, I find myself straining to read the text. Seriously, you should actually see both screen types to find out what you find ideal for your needs. Everyone's eyes are different.

definetly WXGA for me
i will only buy WSXGA if the screen is mora than 17" in size,
cause right now,even with WXGA only , sometimes i have to strain my eyes to see the text,
unless u r a designer or someone who need very high resolution screen, i still recommend a WXGA screen.

I'm going to head to a Dell store to see them both for myself.
