Residue on LCD from protective film ...

Hey everyone,

I noticed on my new 5680 that when I took off the protective plastic film on the LCD that there is a residue of a sort, not sticky or anything, and I can only see it from an angle. Anyone else come across this? You can see the bubbles where the film was touching and not touching the LCD. I tried an LCD cleaner I bought, which did NOTHING to it, and I'm afraid to try a stronger cleaner like windex. Ideas?

If its the adhesive then dont worry - its very VERY mild and will go away with time (probably a couple of weeks).

Just use a damp lint free cloth every day to wipe your screen clear. Sometimes spittle forms a VERY hard mineral residue on the LCD which is hard to remove - in this case I use a mild dishwashing solution to clean it out...

I gotta tell ya, I have used Glass Plus (similar to Windex) on every single monitor and LCD I have ever owned with absolutely no problems. I mean, I wouldn't use turpentine or benzine (!!) of course, or anything abrasive.. but I think you can take this custom cleaner stuff and fugedaboudit...

While on the subject of this whole thing, how bad is it to use a wood based cloth ... like a napkin or paper towel to clean the screen?

I would use a clean cloth rag, like an old Tshirt and spray the cloth instead of spraying the screen directly. You don't want any Windex juice running down the screen into your brand new Sager!!

I have used paper towel before and it hasn't caused problems, but be sure to spray the towel then wipe the screen. And be gentle.

As always, YMMV.

I had this residue on my brand new 8890 too. Actually I think it looks more like a stain, with various patches all over the screen. I first tried to clean it with just a damp cotton cloth, which is typically the only thing I ever need. That reduced the stain but didn't get rid of it. Then I used window cleaner, multiple times. There was no further improvement. I sent a note to Sager and got this response:

"You can use Windex to clean the screen, if can't clean out the plastic residue, then use wd40 first then windex."

I waited a few days to see if the stain still bothered me. It DID! So I did a lube job on my screen! Well, of course that's hard to get off - I did it very sparingly and with the screen oriented horizontally. It took a few passes to get that cleaned off. Finally, I'm never happy with the minor streaking that's left, so I used a See Clear cleaning tissue (made to clean your glasses). Now it's perfect - no streaks, completely clean and uniform.

Do I recommend this treatment? Of course not. Who in their right mind would recommend dumping oil on you new laptop? But it did work for me. I think Sager needs to do some more R&D on their "protective" liner.

damn dude you got some guts dumping all that on the screen. Hmm ... If I understand correctly you cleaned with Windex then applied WD40? ODD!! Maybe I'll consider it if nothing else works out. I agree Sager should figure out what's going on with protective film. My only thought as to why some people don't experience this is that during shipping, if it gets really cold or something perhaps it creates the problem.

Not sure if this was some new procedure, but my 5680 arrived on Wed. with a sorta hard plastic covering the lcd. It was affixed to the side plastic area of the lid, next to the lcd. Nothing was actually touching the lcd, so when I removed it.....perfecto screen.

Hopefully this is the new trend, that adhesive film is poop imo.
