Notebook harddrive interface 2010. Still IDE?

Thread Starter
I'm wondering if it is worth it buying a Seagate HD w/ 5 years warranty over a lower cost Toshiba w/ 3 years warranty. The notebook will not be lasting that long anyway so if I get a barebone 5 years from now or 4 or 3 will they still use IDE interface or will it all be SATA drives? If it will be all SATA within 2 to 3 years then what good use do I have of an old IDE drive? I'm just trying to make the right choice. Hope you understand what I'm trying to say here... lol..

It's not worth worrying about. Despite the rapid speed that new technology comes out, old technology dies off very very slowly. You'll still be able to put an IDE drive into a firewire case and use it as an external, so it won't be a total waste whatever you do.

More likely the drive you buy today will look so pitiful by future standards that you'll have no desire to keep using it. I swapped out a 6GB drive for 20GB drive in one old laptop a few years back; I think I still have the 6GB drive but god only knows where it is. (Gathering dust somewhere.) I swapped out the 20GB drive for a 60GB drive, and the 20GB is now running in an external firewire case. But it's so damn slow that I hardly ever access it...

hyc makes some very good points, especially about using it in an external case...

I would agree that while it'd be nice to have the option of using it again when your current lappy expires, you'll probably be ready to move to bigger and faster drives...
