Compaq Presario V2312us

AMD-ML 28 1.6Ghz
512 MB
DVD RW+/-
60GB HD
ATI x200m 128 shared memory.

$850 after $130 rebate

With this configuration, I don't know where the bottle neck is, CPU or the card, but I can tell you, I cannot play Joint Operation well enough running 800x600 with every setting to Low, the game is just unplayable. However, I can play WarCraft III smoothly. I haven't tried Quake III Arena, but I doubt it's going to be smooth.
This notebook is good enough for intensive macromedia-web, DVD, streaming video, it has a nice screen in this price range.

I just installed Quake3, running 1024x768, it's very smooth! It probably gets like 70fps at this resolution at least, I can actually play Rocket Arena with no choppy frames. I guess maybe Joint Operation has too many trees to render. I'm so happy with this v2312 now.

I have a v2310us, its fine. for the money, it does well but some things I didn't know would bother me do. the "bright view" stuff on the screen, I don't like. in the store it looked awesome but in the real world it reflects everything. the last thing I want to see is my face all day, that's just depressing! and the usb ports are all on the sides, I wish they were in the back like on my last computer. and the video card is intergraded, but you would need to spend a bunch more for a dedicated 128 gpu, so I knew I would be dissatisfied with that before I got it. I regret skimping on a laptop, I should have saved up another 500 and got something I would be satisfied with. its not all bad though, its really light, and it burns DVD's quick. it performs well, for what it is, not a desktop replacement.
good luck
