My linksys wireless router keeps disconnecting on my Dell Inspiron 9300 every 15 - 20 minutes. Does anyone have any idea why? It'll connect for about 15 - 20 minutes then it will just diconnect making me connect back to it, and it it seriously annoying.

Someone please help me.

Thanks in advance, Icealicy!

Try using the reset button on the router... mine was dropping signals every time I went to DL something.

Also, try upgrading the firmware.

Where am i supposed to upgrade firmware for linksys router(s)?

www.linksys.com/download to download your firmware. Check the bottom of the router to make sure you have the right version. Some routers have several revisions.

then you want to go to http://192.168.1.1/ to access your router. Click the Administration tab and under it should be "Firmware upgrade"

hardwire (ethernet) into the router to update the firmware. too many people have ended up with a useless router after trying to update the firmware via wireless.

I had the same problem. If you have any 2.4 gig telephones, they may be interfering. I installed an all new Panasonic 5.8 phone system with only one phone jack needed at the base unit for up to five wireless phones only needing electic outlet. All sing together now.

What ISP are you using? If its Verizon I know theyve been having alot of problems nationwide if your using DHCP, sometimes its on the frits and it'll renew your IP every 15 minutes but disconnecting you in the process.

If thats not the case it might be a 2.4ghz cordless phone. I used to have the same problem, disconnects and speed drop, but I went into my routers settings and move the signal to channel 8 instead of default channel 6 and everything was fine after that.

YES! FINALLY I GOT IT WORKING! All I had to do was go to wireless properties check the properties of my ssid and then uncheck this 802.xx thing... Been going on wireless for awhile. YES!

Not to steal the thread, but I feel this is the best place for this. My wireless router will stop working every now and then. Both my wireless and my wired connections won't work. I will have to unplug the router and plug it back in to get it to work. I have upgraded the firmware. Also, how do I make the wireless connection password protected? Thanks in advance!

Upgrading the firmware on my DLink di-614+ had to opposite effect. The router would restart randomly. I had to take it back to the stock firmware just to get it to act right. I've never been a Dlink fan. Now I am forced to stick with WEP or get a new router. Weak security or new router... I'm a tightwad so I'll let my network be hackable. For shame.

you want to use WPS-TSK, TKIP and set a passphrase...

you should also set "only allow the following MAC's" to the MAC's of the hardware that you want to connect to your router...

I've read that the MAC filtering isn't a great form of protection because a hacker could just spoof a known MAC address and connect. It's better than nothing though.

it's another roadblock to put up... a MAC is easier to figure out than a passphrase, but the two together make a pretty good firewall...

also know that all ya gotta do with your laptop is ride around and find more wireless access than you'll ever need... so by you makin' it tougher, the bad guy's gonna look for an easier target... it's just logical...

just don't use WEP, it's offers far less protection than WPS-TSK, TKIP and a passphrase...

it's kinda like the old joke about the two guys runnin from a bear... one guy stops to put on track shoes... the other says that's not gonna help you outrun the bear... the other says all i've gotta do is outrun you!

just make it tough enuf so they'll move on to the easy targets... just like all security...
