My "old" desktop was an Athlon 2800+ with 512MB, Radeon 9800 128MB, etc. Almost the same as you. I sold it and got a i9300 with 1.6GHz, Geforce 6800 (256MB), UXGA screen, etc.... It blows my old desktop out of the water for just about EVERYTHING; games especially. WoW, BF2, CS:S will run perfect. No problems (ie 50+ FPS). Just remember, on a laptop, 50FPS is faster than the refresh rate of the LCD. Anything higher and the LCD can't handle it.
The 1.6GHz PM even beat my Athlon 2800+ at SuperPI. The 1.6GHz PM is around a 2.4GHz - 2.8GHz Pentium4. But, for playing games, the processor (currently) is not the bottleneck. I say currently because when more complex physics engines come along, CPUs are gonna be taxed hard again.
