Gateway 17" vs. 4780 - Page 3

I thought about the 17" wxga vs 15" uxga. I believe I wll stay with Sager and buy a numeric keypad for $30. It will give me the separate numeric pad like the 17" models but with a better screen and easier to carry around. I will wait several days to see what other post is given to these lp's.

Hopefully the people who already ordered these saw this but, if you go to the business section of their notebooks instead of the home notebooks and select the M675X then the DVD-R comes with the notebook for the exact same price. I think the difference is that the home version comes without the DVD-R but has the 3yr warranty and the business comes with the DVD-R with a 1yr warranty. Also if you click on the customize button there is an option for an instant 100 dollar savings on it. So you could essentially get the M675XL for 2399.00 with the DVD-R recorder in it.

I havent seen the GateWay screen, but I've seen the 4670, the Toshiba's 17"er and the HP's 17"er. I think they are all the same manufactured by the same company, and therefore the GW will have it too. If you ask me, I think the 17" is just gorgeous. It's the perfect ressolution for me.

Cheers.

Firewire?

Since the web site is lacking in photos because of it's newness and because I haven't made the trip to the GW store yet (I will after work today), all I have to go off of is the tech sheet on their web site... But from what it reads it has a NORMAL Firewire port and not a mini. Can someone who's seen it clarify that for me?... Thanks!

Not true. I've seen it and it is definitely a mini 4 pin firewire port. Sorry man.

Well I too was waiting on the 4780 but, just couldn't wait any longer. I went ahead and bought the top of the line M675XL that comes with everything and because of the company I work for I got an 8% discount on it. So I got it for 2300.00 even plus tax and shipping which brought it to just under 2500.00. Can't wait to get it. They said they are waiting on some parts to come in for it so it has a ship date of the 26th of this month.

What resolutions does this Gateway laptop and Sager's 4780 offer? 1280x800? 1440x900? Other?

Thanks

1440x900, same as other wide-aspect SXGA screens.

On the left side. The port layout on the GW is a little weird. On the left side next to the media bay, you have a USB port, the Firewire port, and your audio jacks. On the back, you have two more USB ports. The 4th USB port is on the right side, next to the DVD drive.

Actually, the USB layout isn't bad - gives you a port on both sides and the back of the laptop. That makes access a little easier.

Most of us are already aware that Gateway doesn't make their own notebooks, but that isn't the point. The point is, wherever and whatever Gateway was buying, was inferior to what the other major resellers were buying, at least in terms of the peeling within the Solo line that I had purchased from. Different notebooks are made by different manufacturers and even different models from the same manufacturer have different specs in terms of the heat they generate, their tolerances, and the finish they have. And why would it be stupid to say that they've had a peeling problem when in fact, they did?

I've owned two Dell's, and a Toshiba, and have known others who have owned the same as well as Apple notebooks, and none of them ever peeled. But the Gateway's did. I was in a Gateway store shortly after my system was peeling, and one of the salesman admitted that it had been a problem on their notebooks.

So think what you want, but the problem was there and at the time, only evident with Gateway systems at least in regard to the top seven major resellers. Maybe Gateway has rectified this and maybe they haven't (I never claimed one way or another, but just mentioned the problem I had run into in the past), but all I was saying was that even if Gateway has rectified this, I'm not going to guinea-pig myself to find out if they did.

When you spend $4000 on a laptop and it peels, it doesn't make you want to go back for another.

I came, I saw, I yawned............

There is little this Gateway unit brings to the table that a similar 4760 or the new 4780 can do. The only difference I see is the price. The Gateway unit is just has a higer price tag.

Name ONE app/game that the Gateway can do better that the 4760/4780. Save the "benchmarks" and "performance gain of dual channel vs. single channel ram" canards. For the price you are being charged, what can the Gateway do better than the 4760/4780?

For example it has dual channel RAM, but Gateway does NOT sell the unit with dual channel RAM chips? WTF kinda horse hockey is that????

Neither the web site or the retail stores know the type of hard drive or RPM speed the drive is capable of????

Is anyone out there who owns a 4760 impressed by this? If you are then join Rush Limbaugh in rehab. Because you need more help than I can give you.

Save the flames for later folks. It was all the rotten reviews that I saw at Reseller Ratings that made me choose Sager over Gateway. I prefer "real world performace against hypotheticals . So shoud the rest of you out there.

In the real world ANY Sager can beat whatever laptop you throw at it HANDS DOWN. From Tech support to warranty service to performance. Sager is the $h!t.

So I'm biased, sue me

I hope that whoever out there gets a Gateway is happy with it and that it does what they want it to do. Good luck and gods speed, cause from what I have read and heard you are gonna need it.

Jesus man, get into fanboy therapy IMMEDIATELY. I mean, I posted a lot of the specs here, and I OWN a Sager. I'm on your side, ok?

Don't let brand loyalty blind you. The only confusion surrounding the Gateway is whether the drive is really 7200rpm or not. Obviously, their marketing department hasn't gotten everyone trained up on the new model yet.

As for the RAM, if you are going to make technical arguments, at least try to be accurate. They are not "non dual channel compatible". There's really no such thing. They DO run in dual channel mode, they are just the 333mhz memory chips instead of the 400mhz. Dumb move on their part? Yes, but as others have mentioned it's actually cheaper to upgrade to the 400mhz aftermarket anyway - even for the Sagers if you want to add more RAM.

As for price, dunno where you are getting this from, since last I checked the prices for the 4780 aren't available yet. It's about the same as my 5680 cost me when I configured them similarly.

And bringing the 4760 into this is just silly. The 9600 Pro video alone puts it in a different league, just like the 4780 will whenever they get around to releasing it. Speaking of which, that's a pretty bold statement you make about "Hypothetical" performance when it's the Gateway that's available and the 4780 that's not
post #56 of 94
Yeah, what do expect with a Sager forum full of Sager fanboys. Someone comes in and posts a very viable alternative to the 4780 and eventually someone has to come in and say just because it doesn't have the Sager name on it, it must not be good. First of all this has the intel 865PE chipset on it(would much rather have a chipset I know will be more stable). If you go to sagers website and configure a non-comparable 4760 system with dvd-r, 6 in 1 media reader and all the options that the m675xl has it is only 280.00 less. Granted this is even with the fact that the M675xl has 802.11g internal and a 3.2Ghz P4 and the 9600 w/ 128 megs of memory. I like Sager and think they are a great company but, lets face it Gateway came out with a comparable model and beat them to the punch. Despite what the hardcore Sager fans might think, this is every bit as powerful as the yet to be release 4780 specswise. Lets wait until someone gets their hands on a 4780 and the M675XL before we start saying which one is better.

Ok, the official speed of the 60GB dive in the Gateway = 5400RPM

I just received a call out of the blue from my Gateway sales rep. He sincerely apologized that he gave me incorrect specs on the drive and asked me If I wanted to cancel my order.

I told him no, and he went out of his way to talk to his supervisor and get me a $100 rebate on my system for the confusion.

Between the rebate, and selling the 5400RPM that comes with the Gateway on eBay, I’ll be able to buy a Travelstar 7K60 and pretty much come out even on the deal. I’m happy.

So far I’m impressed with the support. He didn’t have to call me. He didn’t have to get me a rebate. But he didn’t want me to have any surprises when I got the system.

But just a warning to those thinking of ordering this system, the drive (atleast for now) is 5400 RPM.
Dont gnerallize Danner. Many sager fans are still very open to the best out there; the fact that this thread is going strong should be enough proof of that. Just ignore the guy, and move on.

Aha! I was right

That was awfully nice of them. $100 more than makes up for the slower speed, heck, on Newegg.com there's only a $60 difference between the 7200 model and the 5400.

i stand behind sager cause its the better choice. and until someone who gets the gateway and then post a review of the stuff besides the specs like customer support i will continue to stand behind sager

and note i havent said that the gateway is a crappy machine. lookign at the specs it appears to be very nice. i just think the 4780 will be the better choice.if thats fanboi-ish then i guess im a fanboi
