I hate Secure Digital

I had a 1GB SD card. It died on me. Just went bunk. Fine. I got another one, this time hi-speed to go with my new awesome camera. I took some pictures on it, but then when I put it in my SD reader, even tho it comes up in My Computer, I can't open it. It says it needs to be formatted. Fine, I was prepared to lose the pictures that are on it so I went to format. But then it said I can't be formatted! WTF?? It's not the reader or camera or anything since they both work just fine with my 512MB card. One thing I noticed was that when I put the card in the reader or camera, it tended to push the little lock switch a bit. Maybe this is the problem? I tried holding in place with a microscopic piece of tape but, while it kept it from getting locked, didn't solve my problem. Why can't I format the card?? And why does SD hate me?

SD seems to hate me as well.....the price kills me...i find it cheaper to go with compactflash, but most things work with SD nowadays

Try formatting the card in your camera instead of in the memory card reader.

This is why one of the requirements for my camera was a CF card and they go up to 8 gigs... if for some reason you would ever need that much... as for the SD card... i agree with above... try formatting in the camera

Yeah, definately format in the camera. That little piece of advice was buried in the fine print of my camcorder manual and once I followed it life with SD was much happier.

Of course with a cheap 8GB card hovering around the $650 mark you can buy 11 1GB SD cards and still have some cash left over.. And you wouldn't be keeping all of your eggs in one basket.

My buddy has a Compaq lappy with a SD reader in it and it constantly locks up his machine when you try to access it. I'm assuming it's a driver problem. Other than that, that's the only problem i've personally seen with any SD device. SD and mini\microSD rocks
