What are the correct steps to install Nvidia Video Drivers from NVIDIA?

I asked this question because I just installed the bf 2 demo and it said the latest nvidia drivers needed to be 77.30. I have 77.24 installed from dell, since I installed from dell can I still install from nvidia? Ok, so I go to nvidia.com > download drivers > graphic drivers > windows xp > GeForce & TNT2 (note I have a nvidia geforce go 6800 256 mb) so is << that that correct selection?

Thanks in advance, Icealicy!

Please do not bash me, as I am trying to be safe :-P.

First off I think that the new drivers provided by Dell are at least 77.30 . They were just updated a few weeks back so you may not have grabbed them. I use those for BF2 just fine.

If you want anything newer than that, goto www.laptopvideo2go.com. Download the 80.40 driver install, extract it. Then also download the 30.78 modded INF, and replace the one that was extracted by the 8040 install. Without this INF file the nvidia drivers will not install for your 6800go. Once the INF is replaced run the setup for the 8040 drivers and you will be all set.

Be warned, drivers are finicky. When I used the 8040 drivers it didn't recognize my laptop screen as native 1920X1200. I could hack an added resolution for it, but games wouldn't offer the higher resolutions when they were run. I also had weird shading problems with some games, such as Psychonauts. Dells latest drivers ended up being the best for me.

If you do use Dells drivers than I suggest you also make sure to grab the coolbits reg hack. That way you can get the full features of the NVIDIA config stuff, but still use Dells drivers. Once you do that you can crank that card back up to regular speed from the NVIDIA config panel. Dell cuts the speed of the 6800 practically by half on the default settings.
