I would not buy a 600m; they are cheap and flimsy. It would be MUCH better to get a Latitude d610 due to the MUCH higher quality. Many colleges have deals with Dell (and other laptop manufacturers), so you may get an educational discount by ordering through your college. My school offers such discounts for Dell, IBM, HP/compaq and Apple, so I can get an IBM T42 or T43 for the same price as a Latitude D610. Which is another point; most people will want their laptops to last throughout four years of college, and the absolute best brand for reliability and sturdiness is IBM. They're not great for gaming, but they'll do everything else, and they'll do it well and for a long time.
Also, there are MANY notebooks that can suit the needs of the college student, so students have to sort the options out themselves based on their usage plans and personal preferences.
