$4K+ upgrade? Is it worth it?

Hey all. I have an "ageing" 8790-V with all the fixins to include a P4 3.4 EE . I notice that this chip is pretty rare to come by now. Is it worth it to upgrade to a new Sager in turn loosing the power of the 3.4 EE? Id like to have all the latet features like ddr2-3 and the like, but I dunno if it is worth another 4Gs. I have the green to do it, get another high-end machine all decked out, but is it worth it? I did this when I bought the 8790. I had bought a Alienware Area 51M 8 months prior to buying the 8790. This one is now my wifes, and ill probably give her my 8790 and sell the Alienware if I get a new Sager. What ya think?

i think you can still swap the cpu's so that 3.4 EE can be put into the new 9880.

The 3.4EE in the 8790 is 478Pin the proc in the 9880 LGA775, so it a no go. The only things remotely usable is LCD, HDD, ODD.

So, can you order the 9880 without a screen? At least you'd be sure that there were no dead pixels...And if you then resold the 8790, you could add a "No dead pixel guarantee!" to the sale (while mentioning that it had no screen somewhere near the bottom in fine print, of course.)

This is completely off-topic, but are you by chance the same YuriSEAL that posts on the Gamespot/Gamefaqs boards?

Wait till they start coming out with the go7800 and that will be the shiznit. I'm betting instead of selling the mobile7800 they'll probably just make a whole new computer but hey, what do I know?

Well the question you are asking is not something we can answer. Is it worth it to you to have this laptop? It is worth it to me to have the new D900K and that is why PCTorque is counting my money right now

How do u have it config'd? The way I do it, it comes out to about 5 grand! LOL, dunno if im willing to go that rout just yet, but it is a banging lappy. I could probably cut out all the frivolouse stuff like the extra hd with raid, the xtra optical drive, bluetooth, and go straight up performance. Just getting everything performance and not all the goodies could probably drop me into the sub 4k mark. But ill prob wait untill they hash out the first gen bugs though.

Well what had happened was . . . I ordered the 9880 loaded with everything, paid for it, then the next day I think the D900K was announced to come out. Since I have an aliencrap with decent specs I called and put my order on hold until the AMD one comes out, the money he is holding will just go towards that new laptop. So it is not configured yet. I have to decide to go with the FX57 or Dualcore is about the only thing I guess.

Yeah, that was gonna be a tough choice for me, id look up the difference in the two, but im lazy right now, so ill just ask, whats the difference and advantage of one over the other? What setup do you want to go with, dual HD with raid, dual OD, or just one? To fully ping this one out is gonna be a stretch to anyones wallet, I can afford it, but my wife would run me over with the car if I bought another $4500+ lappy, seeing as my 8790 is only about a year old if that lol.
