Strange Desktop Problem

Thread Starter
OK I have a desktop with a strange problem. When I turn it on and windows starts, it takes forever to load. Now, before you jump to a conclusion, the hard drive light isn't blinking or anything. I mean, it blinks for a while, then stops, and the sign "Windows is starting up" is displayed for like 3 minutes. Then, after logging on, the hard drive is actively starting everything up, takes like 2 minutes--nothing unusual, but then everything starts lagging once I start clicking around through different programs. I want to emphasize that it's not the typical hard drive lag--the hard drive is like idle for all I can tell. Then everything just goes to a standstill and the computer is inoperable, not frozen, just useless. Is it a virus, or too much accumulated dust, a hard drive problem, or some software issue?

It is possible your hard drive is almost full. You need at least 15-20% free space on your boot drive for it to run as fast as it advertised, otherwise it takes longer for the arm to access information, hence the longer windows boot.

I'd agree with that, but also throw in run adware/spyware checking, clean out your startup folder to only what you need and defrag.

I had similar issues, some times it would freeze on the windows is starting up bit, sometimes not work at all.

I had a fried mobo.

you know recently ive had an issue with my laptop, where it boots past the windows loading screen, then just goes to a blank screen (making me shut it down several times assuming it froze) for like 4 minutes. Then it loads. Might be similar, ive tried everything imaginable. It only works after a system format though, so I dont know what the problem could be, I just wanna say I have experienced similar lagging, no hard drive activity but nothing is being done.

Try updating the system chipset. It could be the IDE controller/drivers. You can also likely get an HDD fitness test from your HDD manufacturer from their website. It should clue you in as to whether it isthe HDD or something else. If you can back up all your important data, a destructive restore (format/reinstall OS) will tell you for sure if it is a hardware or software originated problem
