Blue screen of death and HDD failure? help please

Just got my dell I6000 a few weeks ago. I've been getting the BSOD intermittently (around 3 times now) but today, whilst running microsoft antispyware, it came on again... The BSOD with stop error: 0X00000077

I then rebooted the computer as I usually do by removing the AC and battery. Then it displayed "unable to find bootable device press F1 to retry, F2 to go to setup". This went on despite me going into bios and trying various boot settings. I then switchoff the unit and removed the battery and it finally booted into windows. It ran chkdsk and found several errors.

question is:
is my harddrive failing? or is it the motherboard? or is it just my installation of windows?

I did a clean install of windows when I first got the computer and only have essential stuff like zonealarm, avast, office 2003, nero. never installed any dodgy software.

what can dell do for me so this doesn't happen again.

Its a memory error. i got the same thing 3 days into owning my 6000d. reseat the memory, and try again.

download memtest86. run on your ram.

reboot and hit F12 on the Dell logo screen, then you should be able to do an IDE drive diagnostic

BTW you don't have to pull the battery and AC cord to reboot the computer. Just push and hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds and the switch will automatically cut power to the system.

the F12 thing is in the bios so it is independent from your hard drive

Yeah , like the author of this thread already knows you need the diagnostics utilities to check the HD, sorry about that, it works on the Optiplex desktop though, that does not make sense because if the drive is having troubles then you cannot run the diagnostics

dell diagnostics came up with several HDD errors:
Read test
error code: 2F0F:0248
Msg: Block 53679231
IDE device failed

when I continued the test got the following errors:
Seek test
2F0F:0262
2F0F:0448
2F0F:0462

SMART test
2F0F:1248
2F0F:1262

Verify test
2F0F:1A48
2F0F:1A62

Gave following error msg:
device initialization failed

what do all these mean?

Drive failure is imminent. Backup your stuff while you can, if you can, and get Dell to send you a new drive ASAP. Make sure you have this error list ready when you're talking to them.

this laptop has been plagued with problems since i got it 3 weeks ago. first a scratched casing and screen... then failed ac adaptor... and now this...

do you think i can get dell to send me a new system and possibly get an upgrade?

definitely ask them for a new one because you have a lemon, be prepared to spend hours on the phone though

If you are still inside 21-day "Satisfaction" time (from the day Dell shipped your i6000), just go to the Dell website, login to your account and request RMA. They will email it to you fairly soon.
You have to pay for the shipment back to Dell though.
I did this when I got i2200 with the lot of problems. Went back in 3 days. Dell credited my card in 2 days after receiving laptop.

Spoke to them and they're arranging for a new replacement on a like-for-like basis... so no free upgrades then....

but good thing this is sorted out... was seriously freaking out...
