M70: Replace the optical drive?

Hi!

I got my M70 last week. I ordered it with the CDRW/DVD combo option, thinking the DVDR/RW was too expensive compared to my needs. I've done some looking around and it looks like I can get a slimline DVDRW drive for a fraction of Dell's price. It's the NEC ND-6500 drive I have in mind. My question is... Is it possible to replace the CDRW/DVD-drive from dell with this NEC drive? And how is it done? A simple swap or serious hardware mods?

Edit: This post at the dell support forums seems to indicate that the NEC ND-6500 is the very drive shipped if you choose the DVDRW option... I doubt you can just buy one and throw it into the modular bay though... or could you?

the slim drives are the same, it is the drive adapter that allows it to be used in the drive slot of the computer. the drive is encased in an adapter case. if you remove the drive from the case (normally just remove some screws), you can swap out with any other slim drive. with that said, the face plate may or may not align depending on the drive you buy and the tabs behind the face plate that attach to the drive door; however, since the drive you mentioned is the option it will fit. you can see how to remove the drive from the service manual section Devices

if you have any other questions on how to remove or replace the parts, go to the dell M70 Service Manual

FWIW: The ND-6650 is the latest gen NEC DVD burner that has replaced the older 6500A.
