6000D slow DVD Burning

Just received my new 6000D 750, 1GB, 128 MB X300, and 8XDVD+/- RW. In the check-out to make sure everything works I tried to burn a DVD using DVD shrink/DVD decrypter - the same as I use on my 2.4 P4 desktop with 512MB, 64 MB Gforce video card. Decryption time is 45 min for the 6000D compared with 22 min for the desktop (same movie). Disk burning times are similar at 21 min. My desktop is over 2.5 years old. Why is the 6000D so slow?

Find out whether you have a Sony or NEC. Go to Dell support and download then apply the latest applicable firmware for your burner. After the reboot, go to device manager then check and make sure that your Secondary IDE channel is using DMA 2 mode. If it's using PIO mode, uninstall or delete your secondary IDE channel then reboot the notebook. It should auto-detect it and enable DMA2 mode.

you probably have the shitty NEC. dont get me wrong, NEC is reliable BUT it's awfully SLOW! it has a rip-lock, therefore it's slow as sh!t unless you hack it. i sold mine and got myself a toshiba and loving it!

my NEC burns at 6x max

Mine too. I wonder why that is, even on 8x media. Its still pretty fast though.

I had a NEC to play with for a few days in my XPS2. I had it as a potential replacement for my Sony. The NEC burned at 8X using Verbatim and ironically, Sony medias. It didn't like TDKs(2.35X). Fujifilms were okay(6.35X).
I kept the Sony because it can read most of my scratched medias and can rip DVDs faster and more reliably. However, the NEC indeed burned faster when using it's preferred medias.

My NEC burns at 8x on most media i have tried.... the Dell firmware was rubbish and burnt at 6x, but i have since flashed it with 203D RPC1 and it works great.

I use TDK media. I don't have another 8x drive to try them on to see if they can get 8x on other drives.

I would consider flashing my drive, but it isn't mine but my dads.

My 6500A is picky. The only thing that I've tried that burns at 8x is TY-002 media. Everything else burns at 6x or 4x.

I updated my NEC firmware from Dell but it makes no difference. The slow part of the process is the ripping of the original disk. I thought this was controlled by the processer rather than the burner. I was more concerned about the speed of the M 1.86 Ghz which I thought was faster than the 2.4 Ghz P4.

no man, the NEC has rip lock, unless you use hack firmware otherwise it's slow as sh!t. i can rip a double layer dvd movie with my toshiba for 9 mins but it will take NEC at least 45-50mins to rip it. and if you use deep analyze then forget it, it will easily take 2 1/2 - 3 hours with NEC but only 1 hour with Toshiba. also, it takes about 11-15mins at 8x to burn a full 4.7GB movie but only 8 mins on toshiba! people have been happy with NEC because they dont know any better or they are comparing it with sony (most of them are bad, so i have heard). but in reality NEC sucks because they are so SLOW!!!

I just find mine very reliable.

Yeah it used to take me at least 40 mins to rip a DVD before i got a hacked firmware... now i can do it in under 10 mins.... I also have a 16X on my desktop and the speed difference isnt too noticable... and certainly not twice as fast as my NEC.... i use cheapo non branded disks and it burns at 8x quite happily.
