Who is planning on putting the Mac OS on their laptop?

I'm probably getting the cart in front of the horses but I think we all know once Apple starts selling the Intel Mac computers there will be a leaked version that you will be able to install the Mac OS on any Intel computer. I do a lot of graphics work and I think I might try it on my 9300 once it happens. Anyone else have any interest in this?

My only concern is driver support initially for everything on my laptop but I would guess having the Mac OS could be a reality on our laptops in about 6 months or so.

Driver support will be important, because Apple will limit the hardware configuration compatibility to make sure that it will only run on the Apple Intel systems (or they'll try, anyways).

From a Macworld article:

Will any PC be able to run Mac OS X for Intel?

Apple says no. Our guess is that some enterprising hacker may be able to get it to work, but we’d expect that if anyone can get OS X to run on PC hardware, it will be a laborious process, and the end result may not be a particularly stable system. You certainly won’t be able to go out, buy OS X, stick the install DVD in a Dell PC, and have it just work. Apple intends Mac OS X to only run on Apple hardware.
And from Everymac.com:

Officially, no. On June 6, 2005, Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller stated that "We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac." However, with the switch to an Intel-based architecture, it will be substantially more difficult for Apple to prevent creative hackers from running MacOS X for Intel on other Intel-based hardware. However, one could expect driver support to be limited for components other than those shipped in Apple systems. At least one PC manufacturer, Dell, has publicly expressed interest in licensing MacOS X for Intel for distribution on their systems.

Apple has always been about forcing people to run their hardware. Switching to Intel will be no different.

If you really want to run OS X, install PearPC.

If it worked, I definitely would do it. On the other hand, I'd probably prefer to install XP on a Powerbook.

I certainly intend to try....

Hi Guys,

Is there a reason why Apple does not want to directly compete with Microsoft and sell OS? I have never used OS X, but I sure wouldn't mind having another option that does not require security patches every month.

I am of the camp that it will be impossible for Apple to stop the world of hackers and programmers from dismantling their OS and getting it to run reasonably well on a PC. It's the inevitability of the situation, and Apple can place all their restrictions, but hundreds of cracked programs have shown that nothing, in the long run, can trump the desire of a geek to get something to run on his computer. Of course, they may surprise us, but I have my doubts.

In that vein, I will most definitely run OSX on my PC if the day comes.

It'll probably take alot of hacking to get it useable. Even if hackers could make use of modified .inf's from apple's desktop 6800 drivers once they are made for intel, I doubt the audio chip could be made to work. The effect of apple's OS has worn off from me also. They have to do alot better than make flashy widgets and improved searching features that suck up ram to make an OS. Atleast I can still run a lean and fast winXP install, even if it does get viruses or spyware every now and then.
