Anyone else think this thread is getting creepy?

Time-Pilot, what do you mean by crosses your connection?
Ditto that.

I don't see how you can have his IP to do a trace, time-pilot, because Divine_Madcat didn't connect to YOUR server, he is connected to whomever PCTorque uses for hosting.

OTOH, mods have access to the IPs, so that could be it.

Everytime you cross a system through a public pipe, in this case it went though a Qwest network in south west you leave a trace, your IP from it's origin to this system.

PC torque has web logs that can be polled, and their ISP also logs all of this traffic, it's a federal requirement. The system that I am working on bases information in your transmitted packet agaist some probability that text contained in these packets has information on you, name email address etc. About 78% of the time it has some valuable information in it.

So I only need to look at all of the traffic that goes to this BBS's IP address, then filter the packets for information thats posted. (actually I don't look at it, we have high speed servers for that.) We simply use a query agaist this data, and 78% of the time it matches back to some publi record.

Got it? Easy huh? I am working ojn this project so an advertising company can look at the "Big I" and tell what type of demographic is what type of sites.

But if you could say it's kinda Orwellian, but the information is already out there we are just gathering it. you can do this yourself with an over the counter product called "Sniffer Pro." It can run a packet trace on almost anything. And the data going to most adresses is over Port 80, anything on 443 of course I can not see. Oh one more thing you can alos grab email straight out of the air on SMTP for some fun.

This was exactly my thoughts too. Is Time-Pilot a mod?

EDIT: Posted too late, the above post says it all

Also sorry Craig, I can't check your info until tomorrow, I am not at my desk anymore. I will look into it in the AM if you still want.

No not a moderator, just a developer.

I'm a developer myself, but I'm not into network programming.

I understand you get the IP, but how do you get the name?

EDIT: ok, you look in the traffic itself. Very interesting.

Heh, it was a joke...my name is...duh?

Henrik, it's mosty prediction from the packet contents. I think that if I could get it work above 80% I could really market it to more of our customers. The problem is that by them time systems like Yahoo and such get accurate information it has already changed. Not to mention the million and half dead ends out there.

I came up with the first redition of this when an old girlfreind called me after using U S Search to find me.

Henrik, I hate to use you as an example but I doubt there is anything that could be gleaned from your information. I mean Henrik is popular name in Sweden correct? So there goes the possibly of being able to single anything worth wile out.

Time-Pilot, no problem. This subject is really interesting. Henrik is a very common name in sweden but I guess you can say something about me by looking at from where my sig is linked.

Ah, sniffing the internet basically...that works, but you'd be pulling random data and then grouping it based on server logs.

Heheheh, why didn't I think of that?

I do know that much of the data on the net is plain text unencrypted. Like pop3 email, smtp, port 80 unsecure web traffic, and so on.

Now see the scary thing is the amount of people who don't know this. I mean, just ask any AOL user *"Do you know what an IP is?"* >>

Sweet

I understand how you are doing it, but there is one thing i dont get. How is my name associated with that address? Yes, i live where you posted, but it shouldnt be under my name. Nor was i posting from home (i was expecting you to pull out my work address). This company you work for, creeps me out to the max...

The software for doing these tricks is pretty simple. It is also easily, readily available for download from techtv.com. If anyone wants to do the search for it please post the link here. If I bother to look I'll post the link. This was actually a topic on tech tv. There is no privacy anymore. What sucks the most is Corporations using this technology. It is good for a lot of things but should probably be saved for police agencies dealing with child safety. Well, thats my opinion. This isnt anything new so I really dont have a program name off the top of my head.

I work for Siemens, but I am contracted to many other entities that give me specifications for software they need, then I try and design it for them.

Like Aurora said, this is old hat. There are many commercially and publically available methods for this type of traffic capture. The part I am working on is a statitics and probability system coupled to it that looks at you, then your name and then searches the public databases for addresses and such. Age groups that type of thing.
Time-Pilot, so you got his ip, and then looked up his name from that via public databases?
The databases that I use are not public, but you could do that. I am working with a public utility and they have access to some subscription databases for sales entities and such.

Most queries are based on email addresses, they net the most information generally.
Hey time.. could u PM me with exactly what you did find.. im kinda curious still..
Fair enough, my question wasnt really if the databases was public or not, but you uses the ip to look him up, you didnt "see" inside his traffic? Hope you understand my poor english
