Specifically to the CPU tear down.

I found out that using a piece of paper and mark where the screws are (and size) for the bottom casing also helps. A rough sketch of the laptop, so they say. And pics along the way are very valuable.

cheers ...

Well guys, I completed the CPU upgrade this afternoon. The $11.00 “eBay” Core Duo T2300 arrived today and I wasted no time, I started the tear down immediately.

First of all, I didn’t take any Pictures. I found a *Pictorial* showing the tear down process of the exact Model of Toshiba that I have. The *Pictorial* had a lot of pictures, 78 pictures to be exact. Although it was thorough in that respect, there was no text accompanying the pictures. (is it OK to post a link to the Pictures?)

So with “cj2600’s” guides AND the extra pictures, I was well prepared visually. I found everything to be straight forward and relatively easy to execute. The ribbon cables are delicate, but come loose easily if unlocked first.

If I were to pick which part of the tear down gave me the most trouble, it was separating the top and bottom from each other. I did use the guitar pick, however I used more than one. After having one pick secured under the top in one location, I would wedge another pick further along the top. I found this technique kept the two pieces from snapping back together while working on the next “Snap”.

I used a plastic box divided into about a dozen compartments to store the screws. I didn’t need that many dividers though. I cut paper to fit the compartments and wrote the screw size and where they came from on each. I also wrote any special notes I may need for reassembly.

Overall the process went smooth and the machine fired right backup. While inside I blew out all the dust and I was surprised how little there was. I did find a medium sized Dust Bunny lodged between the Heat sink fins and the CPU Fan. What I did remove made a difference in my CPU temps. I have noticed a 20 degree Celsius drop at idle. This may be the result of both cleaning the Dust Bunnies and the Arctic Silver at work.

Looking back, it was simple enough I want to find the ‘Fastest” CPU that this model will take and do it again.

Thanks to both qhn and saugen48 for your pointers.

Regards,

Tim

UPDATE:

I went back under the hood and installed a Core 2 Duo T7200.

I would have installed a T7600 or T7800 if they were not so hard to find.

This Laptop is now fairly FAST. The 4 GB of RAM helps a lot.

The Windows
Vista Experience Score for the CPU is showing 5.0

I also swapped the 3945ABG Mini Wireless Card for the 4965AGN Wireless Card. So now I run @ 130Mbps instead of 54Mbps. I think if I were to ad the 3rd antenna I would see faster speeds.

I added a 12 cell battery too.

After having done all the upgrades, I am happy very happy with the performance of this Laptop.

Awesome info. I just installed a faster cpu and if it was not for your website, I would have never figured out how to get this sucker apart. Awesome layout and great instructions.
thank you very much

Nice going Saugen. I am merging your thread to this one and changing the title to reflect the broad support.

Only problem with that is, unless you know this particular link is on the last page, you would have to read thru the who 13 pages to find it. Might be better left on its own below CJ2600s post and supplement was he has done

Thanks, that may just do it. Hope it works out well for the IBM and other brands as well and that the link stays active
