This is a message for all of us P25 Series Toshiba owners. I just upgraded that crappy Matushita (Panasonic) DVD-ROM Drive which comes standard on the P25-S607 laptop with a better model. I purchased a brand new Matsushita UJ-840 Drive and installed it using the existing Mounting rails which came with the laptop. Basically it's a major upgrade for the UJ-811B drive since the UJ-811B drive will NOT burn to any DVD Media except DVD-R's.
Total Upgrade Cost: $157 US This new drive burns the following media at these rated speeds: 5X DVD-RAM Writing 2.4X DVD+R DL Writing 8X DVD±R Writing 4X DVD±RW Writing 24X CD-R Writing 10X CD-RW Writing 8X DVD-ROM Reading 24X CD-ROM Reading I have also upgraded the following features on my p25-s607: 100GB Hitachi Travelstar 7200RPM 7k100 drive Corsair PC3200 Dual Channel DDR 400Mhz Memory 2 x 512MB DDR SODIMM Memory Corsair Model: VS512SDS400 Broadcom 802.11g 54-Mbit Wireless-G Mini-PCI (Custom Installed) <--- Message me about this if you need to upgrade your wireless card to a 54g Card. Geforce FX Go5200 Memory/Core Clock adjustment to NVidia Spec's: (300Mhz Core Clock/600Mhz Memory Clock) DVD-RAM Drive Upgrade: Matsushita UJ-811B to UJ-840 <--- It works at specified speeds! Future Upgrades Planned: Toshiba P25-S670 Direct Mainboard swap for 128MB Geforce FX Go5700 Card! CPU Upgrade from 2.8Ghz to ??? (Not doing this anytime soon) Leave your feedback guys! Rahul great job good to know what works.
What did you use to clock the vid card? Riva??? Where are you getting a mainboard and at what cost?? I would like to do the same for the better video but the cost on the MB's has been very high so has not been cost effective. 3.4ghz is as high as you can go I believe and those chips are kind of high even used. Would really like do do this with either the 3.2 or 3.4. Have upgraded the HD and ram in mine Toshiba MK 5024GAY 16mb cache, 7200 rpm, 50gb Corsair XMS CMXSD512-3200LL 2 x 512mb PC3200 Andy |

Hey I have that same drive that you just got, tell me--does your DVD+R speed actually go to 8x or is it stuck at 2.4? Mine is the latter, see the thread I made in Notebook General about that:
http://www.notebookforums.com/showth...73#post1307073 Also, if you have them, can you somehow pass your drivers on to me? It might help with the speed. M.

In regards to the mainboard question, I don't think ill be doing the swap anytime soon as the mainboard is very expensive. I will try and see if I can get a "for parts" model and strip the mainboard. But that's a long ways away.
Oh and as far as the DVD-ROM drive drivers, It was native to windows XP Pro, I installed the drive, next bootup, it said UJ-840 Found. Hope that helps. I used Riva tuner to clock up the card and it worked great. Definitely seeing some improvements on the game front. Btw I just now installed a new Seagate 5400RPM 100GB HD, so I am selling the Hitach 7k60. Warranty is still good on it till 9/2007. If anyone wants to buy, let me know. On your thread Thelostpatrol, I noticed you said UJ-840S. I have the UJ-840 only... I haven't tested it to burn yet. But once I do, I will let you know...

heres a link to the person I actually bought the drive from, theres plenty of pictures which show the actual drive, and mine is identical, it is a UJ-840 Drive.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Panasonic-UJ-840...QQcmdZViewItem I dont know about yours TheLostPatrol, but maybe we have different models? check the label on top of the drive for yours... later Rahul |

Rahul is your video the 64mb version. Did some clocking with Riva last night and took it to 250/500. Did Riva show a warning on the slide scale going past 250/500 up to the 300/600 setting?

yes sir it did, but RIVA doesn't really know the recommended speeds, I tested the settings I posted, no lockups/overheatting. But do at your own risk!
Yes I have the 64MB version... |

you can upgrade the DVD-R/W drives from the older DVD-RAM drives to the supermulti drives, did it with my Tecra S1. Some notebooks however won't have the software which is compatible with the upgraded drive and you need to use a program like Nero to do the burning.
I couldn't use my original drag'n'drop software, never really used it anyway. |

I should clarify, the drive is in fact detected as UJ-840D in windows. (odd) However, the sticker says UJ-840. It's been a couple of months now, and the drive works fine. I have yet to see it not read a cd. I have also burned a few cd's with it, and it works like a champ. I do believe the UJ-811B drive can be swapped with other models. Also, you are correct, the drive does not have a jumper setting on the back, I am going to go ahead and say that the firmware is set to Cable select for the drive to work. I didn't have to change anything, just Plug and Play.
Good luck! |

I'm getting an I/O error from the UJ-811B dvd drive on my P25-S609. The drive is detected, it shows up on explorer as d:, but gets the I/O error when trying to access it. This was intermitent for a while, but now occurs all the time. Tried reinstalling the driver, cleaned the connector, cleaned the head, swapped slots... no luck, so I'm looking for a new drive.
Saw the link http://cgi.ebay.com/Panasonic-UJ-840... above but in one of the pictures, it shows the connector on the wrong side of the drive (and the auction is over anyway). Anyone have suggestions of where to find a replacement or upgrade for the UJ-811B? Thanks! |
