DVD drive

It looks like my DVD drive needs replaced. Can I replace it with one that is similar or does it need to be the exact part. I can't seem to locate a replacement. I am trying to reinstall the operating system and it will not boot to the drive even though its enabled in the BIOS. Can i install an exernal Cd-Rom and boot to that to install windows? Thx for any advice

Yes to the similar optical drive model, and yes to an external optical drive as boot up option.

cheers ...

Hi qhn,

I'm having difficulties getting the external CD-rom to serve as the boot drive. It always just boots straight to windows. I've made a slipstreamed windows XP3 disk. The external usb cdrom will recognize the contents and i can start the autoplay from that drive. If i move the disk to the internal dvd drive, it doesnt recognize any of the files. My bios is set to boot from cd first then HD. Any advice how i can enable the boot to occur from the external? I'm drawing at straws now. Thanks so much in adb=vance for your help.

Hello again,

Thanks for the advice, but I've decided to call it quits with the 3400. Purchased a macbook pro laptop and getting that set up now.
