I stuck the Auto OC on to got slightly better marks - but game play in fear with Auto OC was bad - turned off Auto all working - 81's for me.

Very nice and great and cool that you get higher scores in 3DMark and all... but I play games mostly on my machine and I hardly read any improvements except for the image quality.

I hope some people did some more testing except for 3Dmark in games with the 81.87 drivers.
If they give benefits over de the latest DELL stock drivers I'll give it a go as well.
No, you will not actually see (with your eyes) any difference at all.

The 6800 series has been out too long to get explosive improvements in performance just by installing new drivers. The new drivers may run a few games at 2-5 fps faster, but on the other hand, it may run a few games 2-5 fps slower. If you run drivers through an extensive test suite spanning a lot of games, you'll see that in the end, the average overall performance hasn't changed more than the margin of error. At this point in the 6800 series, new drivers only fix issues within games. Note that a big fix might drastically improve performance, but such a fix would concern only a single game title.

The 7800 series will definitely benefit more from newer drivers at this time, and it's possible that newer drivers substantially increase performance so that you could notice it in games. That's typical of new hardware, and it's really fun when you get a new driver that really brings performance up a notch. So 7800 people, I'd pay attention to new drivers, you might get a pleasant surprise.

But, if you're into 3dmark05, and "seeing a difference" means getting more 3dmarks, then you've got a lot of drivers to choose from...and I don't know which ones are the best for 3dmark. Nor do I care.

All you need to do is place the modified inf in the place you've downloaded the drivers to and run the setup file - if the drivers install fine then the inf is working, if they don't the inf isn't in the right place.

not really a big deal if u mess up anyways, the inf just changes around a name so ur card is listed as supported. only thing that will happen if ur inf is wrong is that it wont install.

Just typical things in background, like AIM, TS, WinAmp Agent, Quickset...

Using BIOS with stock clock settings and 81.87 drivers with Auto Overclocking in use, stable CS:S, Fable, UT2k4, etc game playing, I scored a 3dmark05 score:

Except that with 80.x set, even 6800 cards got like a 10fps improvement in CS:S stress test. I know I went fro 112 to 126fps by switching from 78.xx to 81.85 drivers and so did many others.

The new drivers run the CS:S stress test 11% faster. Does that 11% increase occur across all image quality settings? Or perhaps only at certain settings? What about a recorded demo of actual gameplay?

Do any other games get better performance? Do any games lose a little performance?

my issue with the 82.10 drivers from dell is that when i tried them it actually bumped down my baseline 3dmark05 score to 6400....
