Okay, developments! It appears shoman was right once again, at least as far as my card is concerned...the memory is proving more overclockable, with the core seeming to be the culprit in terms of artifacts...at 450/1200, I started to get visual artifacting in FEAR after around an hour of play...I've been playing NFSMW2 for about 1.5 hours now, though, at 445/1250 with no visible problems...also, I hadn't tried that combo in 3DMark, and it gives the 2nd highest score I've ever turned in (7524), indicating that performance in games is at least empirically better (though of course there is not much visible difference in games going from ~7350 to ~7500, but if it's more stable, so much the better)!

Have you tried 440/1300? 445/1300? I was going to try those combos tomorrow (along with 450/1300) and see if I could find the sweet spot. But I'll be more than happy to let you blaze the way

With proper cooling that 1.6ns memory can hit some good speeds

Be careful at 650Mhz though.

It's not so much artifacts that YOU see. Run ATi Tool beta 8 or the latest beta. That app detects errors the eye can't see

Nope. I'm sticking with 445/1250 until I'm certain it's stable...go for it, man, and post your results, please...all of the 3dmark runs I've made are posted at the top of this thread, and I keep updating the list to reflect new developments...great freaking card, though...i'm jazzed because games really do play much better at high resolutions...

One game that WILL crunch your system, though, no matter what specs you're running is Everquest2...if you use 1920x1200x2x8x and crank most of the other settings to max, you will be getting like 5-10 FPS in the opening scene on the boat! AA and AF have to be set in the driver, FFS, even though every other option in the universe is there...wtf is up with that? Anyhow, I was stunned by this crappy performance, and I still haven't figured out which settings are doing it...

Is the ram on the 7800's different from the one used on the 6800's?
My 6800's ram will do 1300 just fine, why not mod the bioses to do that too?
(Now I'll have to mod all bioses for all core speeds to run at 1300 ram...maybe even 1350)
Has anybody driven the 7800's ram to 1300 and or beyond at all??

Thanks a lot, hammer. I'm new to overclocking and am up to 650/1200 with a 3dm05 of 7640. Temp is 53 and I haven't noticed any problems. I think I'll stick with this for a few days.

wait a second...650Mhz Core? That's a typo, right? Heh, great f*cking score on 3dmark, though...that's the best I've ever seen on a laptop, I think...

@tijgert: I didn't bother to place 1300Mhz memory clocks on the BIOS CD...probably should have, but I honestly didn't think it would clock that high reliably...plus, I was fooled by the fact that jacking up the Core clock causes a much higher performance gain AT FIRST...when the Core levels off, then, the Memory starts to take over in terms of Mhz/performance I think...there's a point where those curves intersect, I can feel it! Maybe 1300+Mhz memory and lower core is answer? Does anyone think I should add these to the BIOS CD Bootdisk image? Would it be worth it? We need some more testing data from people, yet, I think...

I think you have a typo

250 MHz overclock on the core would be nice.

Oh man. Sorry about the typo. I meant 465. I've gone to 465/1250 with a score of 7739. This is fun!

hammer,

I'd like to try 1300. Thanks.

BTW, I don't know what an artifact looks like, yet.

Nic,

Damn nice scores, man! Have you put it under any load to see how it handles stress?

I see that you have the 2.26 CPU. I'm starting to think that our 3DMark05 scores are CPU bound.

I have been thinking that too. It doesn't matter unless it affects real games. Maybe it would have been worth it getting the big CPU, but I think I am still happy and have $500 to blow on games/peripherals.

I plan to try a pinmod/AS5 when my warranty wears out. I will probably just shoot for 2.26 territory, but makbe 2.4+. 400 MHz FSB CPUs should be dirt cheap in a year. Not that they are all that pricey now.

Niw,

No stress except 30m of FEAR with a temp rise to 71. I'll get back to the board in a few days. I think I saw an artifact in windows while scrolling (funky colors).
