The temps peeps have been posting here and elsewhere really make me wonder. I get up to 94C with stock speeds in FEAR. 87-91 is more typical of a gaming session. Far Cry creeps up there too. OC doesn't seem to affect the temps to a great degree. Ran 470/1250 pretty well and was happy with 450/1250.

Since I can OC to about the same levels and am stable, I think there has to be some difference in the temp readings. I am using I9KFANGUI to track the temps. Maybe I should try the nVidia one Doc was so kind to post.

I went back to my default clocks and back to scoring a mere 6523 (450/1200 @ 7223 with my previous overclocking). I think I need to buy Artic Silver because my idle temps are 51.

r u guys basing stability on your ability to see artifacts in games or r u using a utility like atitool to scan for artifacts. i was running 435/1300 and everything looked ok, but at tool came back w/ errors after only a few minutes of artifact scanning.

So how is it that some of us can use the NV Control Panel to O/C. Yet others, like me, have to flash the bios on the chip to the specified setting? Mine jumps like crazy! On some of the higher clocks it will get like 7,120, then, on another clock 10 - 20mhz less, it will get the same score. I am going to re-load, because ever since I did this whole 7800GTX upgrade thing, AIM crashes (big deal), but so does alot of other programs, like Kaspersky and what not. So I dont know if it wigged Windows out by doing this. Man, I hate re-loading. Well any ideas as to why some of us cant O/C with the control panel, and y on some clocks the score is the same.
Thanks

Hey what is that ATItool? I ran it for 10m to 98 degrees and stopped it before my heart did. Does it find artifacts or are we supposed to see it in the cube?

Been running 450/1200 on Rome total War (I Know I know)......anyway after about an hour graphics went south. Even on the lowest settings in the setup still only got just over an hour before things got bad - in game reset to the desktop. The temp is only maxing at 68 to 72 degress so no big thing here - will drop down a notch see what happens to get stable game play.

Temps don't really matter. If it's unstable at 4XX then it's unstable. Once it becomes unstable at a certain speed no matter what temp that's when you have to start giving it more voltage.

shoman,

do u rely strictly on atitool's artifact scanning to determine the stability of an oc?

w/ my old m9800, i used to run the oc scanner for 1 hr. if no artifacts were found, then it was probably a good oc.

I don't totally trust it, but it's a good start to determine what oc is good and what isn't. Normally if ATi Tool finds an error I won't run the GPU on the brink of that error. Maybe a few MHz less ya know? Sometimes ATi tool can be wrong but usually it's right.

You don't have to let it run for hours on in too, just 10 to 15 minutes.

Plus always watch for visual errors in a game.

I haven't done any overclocking (to the point where I keep my settings) on my GTX, I find that overclocking the CPU yeilds better performance then overclocking the GPU. Will be the same for the mobile cards, if you can pinmod to 2.6GHz imagine......

Maybe 1300+Mhz memory and lower core is answer? Does anyone think I should add these to the BIOS CD Bootdisk image? Would it be worth it? We need some more testing data from people, yet, I think...
How do we get the 1300 clocks....did I miss something looking at moving back from 450/1200 - 440/1300 if its worth it ?

1300 workes very nicely on a 6800 and it may give you a nice boost when you've got a top OC'ing GPU combined with a powerfull CPU.

I'm starting to think that our 3DMark05 scores are CPU bound.

Yeah, search this forum.
Find yourself a M735 or M745 and pinmod the sucker... worked for me but that's no guarantee for you.

Niwotian60 - did you try the other combos ? I have a similar system to you so looking for a comparison of what is and is not working.

Ok these are mine so far

@ 400/1060 --- 3DMark05 6647 (freeware tests) No Artifacting
@ 425/1200 --- 3DMark05 7132 (freeware tests) No Artifacting

Thats just so far though so i might take it higher later on going to test it through a few games for a few days and see if i get any artifacting.
I know some of you hate ATI tool for scanning out artifacts but i like it as it heats up the card quick and does the job. I Tested for 10mins and just left the machine stood doing nothing else.

Heres a quick pic of what i was looking at. In this my core/mem was @ 425/1200 in the tray you can also see my cpu temp. The core temp climbed worryingly quickly to 80 then slower to 83 and eventually crawled up to 87 and stood there for the last couple of miniutes of the test.
