4780 and 4080 ctrl and FN key swap firmware!!

Do not install the below firmware on any system other than the 4780/4080 or it WILL ruin it!
This is at your own risk so if you're not confident in doing this, nobody is forcing you =)

Make SURE you're plugged into AC and have the battery installed when doing this.

First you need to download the .iso file and save it to your desktop:

Next put a blank CD in your CD burner and open up Nero Express:

Select Disc Image:

In the pop up box 2nd pull down menu select "all files":

Browse to your desktop and double click the "fnctrl.iso" file you have saved there:

Review it and burn it. The burner used here was the DVD-RW/CD-RW drive:

Now reboot your computer with the CD inserted. Right at bootup, push "F2" if you need to jump in the bios and set it to boot from CD if it isn't by default. It's listed under the "boot" tab and you just make sure the CDROM is on top of the list by using "+" after you highlight it. Then go to save and exit.

At this point, the computer should automatically flash itself and come to a screen telling you to remove the CD/Floppy and manually reboot.

Remove the CD and hold the power button down a few secs to shut it down, then reboot.

Now the fn key will work as the ctrl key and the ctrl key will work as the fn key so all that is left to do is swap the keycovers to reflect this:

carefully pull up on the top of the key with your fingernail or something like that to release the top half of the key. Then you can lift it off.

To put it back on, slide the bottom down into place first then snap the top into place.

EDIT
For the 4080, the keyboard is like the 5680 in that the keycaps come off opposite from the 8890 and 47XX:

Carefully pull up on the bottom of the key with your fingernail or something like that to release the bottom half of the key. Then you can lift it off.

I followed Adam's instructions to the letter on my 3 day old 4080 but it didn't work. Any suggestions on what I might have missed or done wrong?

Christ Adam,

You use a freakin' hammer to fix your computer? Those Sagers are tough!! That looks like a 20 oz straightclaw Estwing with a drywall grid face and stainless steel shank. Would a normal 16 oz wood handled garden variety work?

I could not get it to run at first, but it worked after setting the bios to default values. Thanks Adam.

It doesn't work

I burned the ISO and rebooted. The CD runs the Phoenix update and everything appears to go exactly as it should (both by description and by the screen shots). I've completely powered down the laptop 3 times now and turned it back on and the FN key is still the outside key and the CTRL key is still the inside key. Any ideas?

Was it the 4080 system?

Well, in most PC keyboards the CTRL key is located at the bottom of the first key row to the left, but in the ones bundled with the 4780 and the 4080 that's where the "Fn" key is placed, thus misplacing the CTRL key just next to it, on the right. That odd disposition bothers some users, as the CTRL key is used quite a lot for keyboard shortcuts and, of course, for gaming. That's why, in answer to the complaints and demands of these users, Adam kindly posted this keyboard bios with "easy setup instructions" (the rusty hammer is mandatory to successfully accomplish the "mod") in the forum. You don't need to flash your keyboard bios if you're not concerned about this particular matter. The wicked spectre (specter for people in the US) of the twisted computer hardware won't come to rape your children if you don't do so

P.D.: You are forgiven, my child

Hi Guys!

I installed the new firmware on my D410V (4080) and everything is as as before - Fn is still outside CTRL.

Adam: Thanks for helping us out! Have you tried this fix on the 4080 yourself, or only on the 4780? I ask because it seems as if everybody in this thread with a 4080 have the same "problem" as me - the fix do not work.

It would be great if we could solve this. I really want the CTRL key in the left corner!

I think that you are missing the point. You need to scare the keyboard to death first, showing the dirty hammer and the rusty secateurs (pruning shears for you?) to it. Then it shall work.

AHA!

I'll have to leave the hammer out in the snow, then it will become rusty!! Problem solved!

Question:

If you upgrade the BIOS in the future, will future BIOS's make the keys revert back to their original states? If so, would the above instructions have to be repeated at that point (assuming they would still work)?
