You don't repair something like that. The customer just brought it in that way more than likely to document the event in case the mfg gave him any grief in getting the laptop replaced.

If it was me, and I was the mfg... I'd replace it with whatever model the customer wanted for FREE, regardless if it was in , or "out" of warranty. In this case the unit was only five months old so this should not be a problem.

I've give the customer a "new" laptop, with whatever options he/she wanted, plus addtional stuff like a docking station, carry case, etc to keep the customer "happy". To retain the customer.
