5672 Hard Drive noise

Question to other 5672 owners:

Does your hard drive make an occasional metalic-like sound? It is of random frequency and is only a tiny-bit louder than the actual grinding noise of the hard drive operation.

And while on the topic of hard drives, is there any advantage to converting to NTFS from the factory default FAT32?

I had a 5672 for about a week, and didn't hear that...

One significant advantage to NTFS over FAT32 is the issue of slack--that is, the larger the FAT32 partition, the larger the cluster size and the more space is wasted. With a >32GB partition, for example, the cluster size is 16KB, resulting in about 1GB of wasted space. With NTFS, cluster size is limited to 4KB, thus minimizing slack.

There are other advantages as well, such as performance and reliability. There's certainly no downside to converting...

No, but the slot load dvd burner is as noisy as hell.

Yes, NTFS is more secure and stable. Just google it and you will get a ton of opinions

Judt put your ear right on the chassis where the hard drive is (left of the touchpad), such that you can hear the regular grinding noise of the hard drive, and stay like that for about a minute or so. Did you head ANY unique sounds at all?

Good point--the DVD drive _was_ loud on mine. It was cool, but that did tend to lose its luster with the clunking...

This is starting to scare me.

Please, I beg you, do this:

Shut down the laptop, and put your ear to where the hard drive is (left of the touchpad). Wait for the logoff and shutdown processes to complete, and then just before the laptop turns off listen very carefully.

Did you hear that metallic 'click' like sound just before the hard drive powered down? Now can you hear that same sound from time to time while the laptop is on?

Sorry, I returned my 5672 (only because I decided on an 8204), so I can't try it for you.
