8887 Laptop Mini-PCI Connection Issues

I am using the mini-PCI wireless card with the 8887. I am trying to connect to a Linksys-wmp11 router/wireless access point. I get an IP address from the router but I can not utilize the network (can't ping, can't connect, etc.).

Thanks in advance,

Phar

Turn off WEP, and make sure MAC filtering is not on.

Make sure you have the correct network name under the prism drivers -- the same one you set on your WAP (do not use the built in microsoft drivers).

Try setting a static IP address through the TCP/IP properties.

Does pinging 127.0.0.1 work? (might show a general networking problem)

No luck on any of these.. Pinging 127.0.0.1 works fine but on Windows NT kernel systems that doesn't get to the physical card. The network name is correct and wep and mac filtering are off.

Any other suggestions?

I have the wireless card on my 8887 working now with a Linksys WAP11, and except for some data rate problems (the WAP11, not the notebook), it's been working fine as follows:

- Win2K Pro
- 1.07.37 drivers from the driver CD
- MAC filtering enabled using the MAC reported by the wireless settings utility
- 128-bit WEP enabled; keys on both are set by passphrase. My data rate drops about 15-20% with WEP enabled, though.
- "Network name" the same as the "ESSID" on the Linksys.
- Authentication type "Shared Key" on WAP11, "Must use Shared with W"(EP) for the 8887. To set the latter, go to the device properties, advanced tab from device manager.

In addition to turning off MAC filtering and WEP, try changing the authentication type to "Both" on the Linksys and toggling through the authentication types on the 8887 - if you have the PRISM status window open, you should see it lock up right away.

Anyone know which chipset the mini-pci card supports? My current wireless setup at home is using the dlink 22mbps 802.11b with 256bit encryption. I think I am probably going ot have to back down to 128bit though. :/

It is normal for your data rate to drop 15-20% with WEP enabled (or even more). The card has to spend the time doing the encryption/decryption. Worth it if you are in an area where people can see your AP...

The miniPCI wireless card is a Prism with an Intersil design.

Cheers.

I received my 8887 yesterday and opened it up last night. Aside from the mp3 player not being in the box everything was perfect.

One problem I am having however is that WinXP seems to have very screwed up support for wireless networks. I've had it connected to the network only to have it not connect once I've rebooted. Anybody else experience this and if so, did you manage to fix it?

The MP3 players are shipping a couple of days behind the laptop because of there being a low number of them in stock.

Use the prism utility, do not use the windows XP built-in wireless... turn it off
