Is that $45 restore disc from HP the same as the Recovery Discs created from the hard drive?

I'm not sure but he said it is a Applications and Software restore disc. He said the other disc I will use is the $10 os restore. So I think that if I were to restore my comp, I would use the os restore disc, which has no hp bullshit on it, then use the applications and software restore which I'm hoping I can choose what crap I want installed.

Also, Ericko, is that a REAL copy of the QPv1 disc? If so the files are quite interesting. I'm starting to think they stole/bought this from the people who made it for linux and is a free thing.

When I bought my dv4000 HP sent me the OS CD and an Aplications and Driver Recovery CD, so yes, you install a clean OS and then you decide what software to install, this way you only install the crap that you want.

Have you used the $10 OS disc to "install" Windows?

I'm wondering if it has the needed "drivers" intergrated into it. I see NO reference to the needed SATA drivers for example on a machine using a SATA hard drive..

When I bought my dv4000 there wasn't that $10 OS disc option, HP sent me the discs for free and my laptop didn't come with a recovery partition.

And I always install WinXP using a copy (I don't want the original to get scratched) of the OS disc that HP sent me.

Just a heads up....Using disk management in XP you can delete the QuickPlay partition... Does not prompt you with "Are You Sure", etc, just deletes it so be carefull if you want to keep the QuickPlay feature...

Fiqured I'd post this, it may help someone that has deleted their QuickPlay partition. It pertains to a Hp Pavilion dv4000 and QuickPlay v 1.1?....

Note that it does say the partiton can be recreated, the program re-installed... On a new, or totally wiped clean, all partitions deleted hard drive...

Reading the above and hearing from people who purchased a machine with v1.1 on it that did receive a install disc for the program makes me wonder "where" my QuickPlay V2.0 install disc is... Especially seeing how "easy" it is for the QP partition to be deleted. (see above post)

They should provide the discs free upon request... or provide a download link. HP saying it would stress their servers to host the file is BS, seeing how not many people percentage wise are going to need it.

BTW... Chuck11... did you happen to get a part number during the phone conversation, of confirmation e-mail? I only saw version 1.1 on a cd when I doing some poking around on the HP partsurfer site a couple of days ago...

Here's the offical HP way to re-install QuickPlay v1.1, assuming a QP v2.0 Cd install disc can be sourced... I would think the process to be the same, except that the partition needs to be 1024mb... postioned as the last partition on the drive...

QuickPlay software plays DVD movies or music CDs on your notebook without starting Windows. This software comes pre-installed on some notebooks and is not available for all notebook models.
If there are any install or re-install issues, this document describes how to install the QuickPlay software on a new hard drive, or, how to re-install the software on your current hard drive.
QuickPlay installation will stop if any of the following conditions occur:
There is insufficient hard drive space.
You are attempting to install QuickPlay on an unsupported notebook.
Required software for installation of QuickPlay:
Operating System CD-ROM (OSCD) or Operating System DVD (OSDVD)
Driver Recovery CD-ROM (DRCD) or DVD (DRDVD)
QuickPlay Installation CD-ROM
Install QuickPlay on a new hard drive
To install on a new hard drive from HP or to install on an existing hard drive, use the following steps to setup QuickPlay:
Insert the OSCD or OSDVD that was included with your notebook and then restart the notebook.
During the Windows Setup, you will be prompted to create a partition on your hard drive for Windows installation. When the prompt To create the new partition, enter a size below and press enter appears, enter your adjusted Windows partition size. This will allow 204 MB of free space to be allocated for the QuickPlay partition.
To determine your adjusted Windows partition size, subtract the number 204 from the number already suggested by the Windows Setup. For example, the suggested partition size for an average 40 GB hard drive will be similar to 39333 MB. The adjusted Windows partition size would be 33129 MB or 39333 MB minus 204 MB.
Continue to follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation and setup of Windows XP.
Once Windows XP is installed, insert the DRCD or DRDVD and follow the prompts to install all of the required drivers and software.
After the software and drivers for your notebook have been installed, including the WinDVD Player software, insert the QuickPlay Installation CD-ROM.
Restart the notebook. The QuickPlay Installation CD-ROM will automatically begin to install the QuickPlay software.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the QuickPlay installation.
Re-install the QuickPlay software
Use the following steps to re-install the QuickPlay software on your existing hard drive.
Insert the QuickPlay Installation CD-ROM into the drive.
Turn off and then turn on the notebook PC.
When the notebook is restarting the QuickPlay Installation CD-ROM will automatically begin to install the QuickPlay software.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the QuickPlay installation.

In this thread they are talking about getting a dv8000 working in Linux...one of the posters brought up the fact QuickPlay is a Linux program... (The thread mainly talking about a network problem and other issues in getting Linux to work with the dv8000 hardware)

Seeing how those Linux guys seem to know Linux backwards and forwards it seems to me that they would be able to shed some light on QuickPlay. Allot of the guys run a dual boot or know windows also so I would assume someone at a forum like in the link below would be able to "make" a v2.0 install disc, if it is not made available just for the challenge. http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/modules...ewtopic&t=2826

hey wearenotalone, me and you can work something out. Why don't you give me your AIM username or whatever client you use. If we can't figure this out then you could maybe ask some linux people and I know a couple hardcore linux fans so...I hope we can figure this out.

Mmm...I don't really think bittorrent is a good idea.

A little off topic, will the QuickPlay v1 disk posted work with laptops that didn't come with QuickPlay to begin with, or does something have to be enabled in the bios? If its just a linux partition, it might work. Or is there no way to control it without the special media buttons?

P.S. Chuck11, why not just zip the image and split archive it? 3 files at 300mb each, or 5 files at 200mb each, etc. Easier to upload and easier to find a place that can host the split files.

While I apperciate your offer, I really just don't have the time, the programing background, nor the hard core motivation at this point in time. Right now I've been spending alot of time researching the various external hard drive enclosures, focusing on that because I'm wanting to "Ghost" the SATA drive in my dv8000t before messing around with it.... Besides ghosting the hd, I'm wanting a good enclousure to back up 10 years worth of data... I've lost data on hard drives before and it's not a good feeling, luckly when I lost data before it was nothing important.

If I had more time and I was a "programer" type I would, but really don't have to much more time to put into this QuickPlay unless I want a divorce. I've got a house to remodel, have to find some land, and build another house, by myself BTW.... On remodeling the house, I've got about 6,000 sqft of "stuff" in about 1,600 sqft so it's very hard to do anything. Simple 5 minute job turns into 2 hours. Weather has turned good and I really need to focus on getting the house remodeled, getting it sold... Finding a place to store my stuff. One idea I had was to buy some ISO 40ft -53 ft shipping containers to store my stuff in. Fiqured I buy a couple to store the stuff in at the new home site and incorprorate them into the design of the house /shop so I only have to move them (1) time... Maybe incorporating them into the structure as some kind of tornado /storm shelter.


Let's do this, lets see what disc you get... Hopefully it will be QP v2.0....If so lets get a copy posted here and there.

If not, as time permits when we find a thread like I referenced above, post in that thread about QP.

If the disc you get turns out not to be v2.0 I think everyone that owns a HP that has QP v2.0 installed and had NOT received a install disc needs to contact HP directly and demand they be shipped a copy of 2.0.

Ditto if you receive the QP v2.0 disc... Contact HP and demand that either a downloadable version be made available, ship a install disc with the product, Or ship out a free copy to anyone that requests it, if their model shipped with it.

(Seeing how that might that many months, if ever before HP would do so, I'm really hoping you're going to receive v2.0 and you can upload it somewhere.)

Like I posted above it's REAL easy to delete the QP partition... and with no install disc, and no downloadable version of the program there's no way to "re-install" the program... Unless maybe you've "ghosted" the partition/drive... and then run the setup.exe in the C:\SwSetup\QLB that hopefully "re-installs" the program.

QLB =(ini file says: AppName=Quick Launch Buttons)

Got to run, need to hunt up a sata cable/external enclosure so I get the hd ghosted...

Let everyone know when you get the CD. I would assume it would be any day now.
