DVD failed to detect in 6400 BIOS
I have updated the NEC DVDRW 6650 firmware to liggy's firmware. But the BIOS failed to recognize the DVD drive after reboot. The BIOS said error on detecting and ask me to plug the drive firmly and reboot or just press "Esc" to skip the DVD drive detection. I can't use the drive now.
Please help me! ![]()

I updated mine this morning, but since my nec 6650 drive came with firmware 1.02c I used liggy's modified version of 1.02c. You should have used NeroInfoTool to check to see what firmware version your drive shipped with because if it was version 1.xx you need to use another version 1.xx firmware and if it came with version 2.xx you need to use another 2.xx. In other words, you can't change between the two versions of firmware. Version 1.xx users need to stay with version 1.xx firmware.
Have you tried making a dos boot cd with the dos flasher on it and re-flashing that way?

Unluckily when I download the firmware, there is no 1.02c should flash with 1.xx firmware. I just know after problem happpend and search in Liggy's web.
The drive is no way to detect from BIOS. I cannot boot from DVD drive. If I can, I will flash in DOS.

Sorry forgot you couldn't use the drive. You might be able to get an adapter and hook it up to a desktop system to try and flash it? Not sure what an adapter would cost though, so you would have to be careful because I think you can find another slimline dvd+-rw for around $100

Thanks for you kindly help! I saved my semi-bricked DVD drive!
That's how I work it out: 1) Pull out the drive 2) Turn on the laptop 3) After boot up, turn it to standby mode 4) Plug in the drive 5) Turn on the laptop again. XP would be able to recognize it. 6) Use binflash gui to flash it to the original firmware. Error occurs and LED non-stop flashing. XP would unloaded the drive. 7) Rescan new hardware in Device manager of Control Panel. XP would detect it again even the drive LED flashing. 8) Use binflash gui again to flash with the original firmware. This time would have no errors occurs. 9) Completed flashing firmware and reboot. If anyone got a bricked drive should try to see whether this method will help you to save your drive!

That should be posted to the FAQ's here and on CDFreaks website, because I'm sure you're not the only one to do that. Nice to hear you got it working again
![]() ![]() Did you eventually go with the modified 1.02c firmware or are you just going to cut your losses and chalk it up as a lesson learned?

Actually I have posted this question on CDFreaks too. I also posted this procedures there.
Modified firmware 1.02c? No. Because I would like to remove the rip lock with modified firmware but I found that the speed is similar to the original firmware. Thus no modified firmware now. Thanks for you kindly help! ![]()
