With all these horror stories, I figured I should mention the following.
I purchased a laptop in June off of ebay. $885. I sent the money off to the seller, asking that he not ship the laptop off until the next Thursday, as I was going to be out of state on my honeymoon. He said it wasn't a problem, we communicated really well for the next 2 days. I tried sending an email on Tuesday asking that he go ahead and ship it, as I could have my neighbor pick it up for me. The email bounced. I checked paypal to see if there was a different email address to try. Noticed that they pulled the money out of my bank account, not my credit card (putting me -723 on my wife's bank account)...but while I'm sure I said to pay with CC, I had to redo it because my credit card wasn't associated with the account yet. I could easily have messed it up when I redid it. Days went by, and emails bounced from every account I sent from. I filed a dispute. Eventually, I filed a complaint for chargeback on the 24th. The deadline for him to respond was the 4th of July. I knew I was fairly safe, as emails bounced the entire time, I knew he wouldn't be responding. On the 5th, it was ruled in my favor, and I got all my money back. It's in my bank account now. As others have suggested, don't trust Paypal any more than you have to, and keep the money out of there. I've been lucky over the years, but a friend of mine lost a dispute (and he deserved it too) and had his account locked for a while.

As long as you follow each guidelines Paypal has, you're safe. Of course you're gonna get screwed if you're trying to sell/buy from an unconfirmed address.
I've never had problems with Paypal. It's great. |
