Driver is causing random Oblivion LOAD crashes!!

So, hi,

Ever since I got Oblivion, I've been using Tony's driver, the "Oblivion" Driver. As of Recently, though, I've been getting crashes when my system loads a new area, i.e. opening a door, when there's a load screen. Sometimes it crashes before the load screen appears, during it, or right after. It just BSODs on me. Thing is, when I send the problem report I get right after I restart the computer, I'm told a driver has caused the problem, just not of what device.

At this moment I am very concerned: The first BSOD was a week ago, then three days ago till today I've been getting one each day, and now, I got the second one today... and I've only played one hour.

However, since I've used the Tony driver for maybe 30-40 hours (a rough guess, enough, however), I'm thinking about the idea that maybe the enabled MULITHREADING options in the .ini are responsible. Can anyone confirm having problems with these? I will turn the off in the hopes of fixing my problems... it's interesting though that i only crash on loads, when the harddrive is accessed.

Just so it's clearer, since I'm looking at your sig, is the cpu and gpu all at defaults? Any program like Oblivion that stresses things to the max is likely to bring out the tiniest imperfections in a system setup. Changing to entirely defaults creates, of course, the highest degree of stability possible from a system. So voltage, speeds timings all to default and see if that helps.

What version of Tony's drivers are you using?

There are quite a few people that reported issues with the latest ones. 84.?? . Go back one to the 83.??'s and see if that helps.

Also reduce settings and test from there.

Aight, i changed the .ini tweak that might've been causing it, if the problem isn't resolved, I'll try changing the driver. It's odd how it's worked in this setup for so long... it actually got worse after I DOWNCLOCKED my gpu to 440 core.

I'm using 84.25 v2.30 GS with all max settings on oblivion and never had one BSOD yet. Then again im using all default settings on my system. goodluck man. By the way it looks great and getting 30fps(outside) and 50+fps(inside) average.

Sorry to hear about the grief for the OP.

Thanx for this update on what's working for you. I will be looking for that driver set as soon as I get my 1710 (along with the latest version if applicable). I figure I can always trying different versions until one sticks.

As for your OB performance, that's really exciting stuff. I have been playing OB on the 360 waiting for this lappy upgrade. With 512 GTX I am really stoked about what I will be getting in OB. From the sounds of your experience I should be able to get max settings with a silky smooth experience.

Question - do you use HDR or AA? With my 1,920x1,200 res I am thinking of going HDR and letting the high res compensate for the lack of AA.

I turned HDR off and using bloom and 4xAA but everything else is on max settings. It works fine with HDR but doesnt look as good but with other games I have HDR turned on and it looks amazing but not on oblivion for some reason. I used to use 1900x1200 but it starts to get laggy so I left it on 1280x800. I hope this helps you further but then again with the M1710 and the 512mb 7900 gtx you should be able to handle anything out there.

I use 1920x1200... and with AA, it's just... so damn real. Still gotta play Oblivion, but it seems WCIII has a higher priority atm.

Yes, the dedicated 512MB of DDR3 will be very cool for textures on large resolutions. I keep rubbing my hands at the thought of this new lappy.

I will have to try with HDR and then with AA and see what feels better. I have been spoilt by the 360, giving me 4xAA and HDR. However, I can't wait to get the ini tweaks going to increase that draw distance. The low texture stuff on the 360 still gets in the way. Water reflections in the distance are the absolute worst.

Another thing about the PC Version you cannot run HDR and AA simultaneously which sucks. So that is why i stuck with bloom and AA rather than HDR (makes things look like plastic and washed out). Hopefully they will come out with some sort of mod or update to turn both on at the same time. I wonder how the xbox 360 version of Oblivion is like...well i dont have one so ill just have to trust you in that one. The PC version is truely amazing when overlooking to distant lands.
