Cool 9750: Upgraing Video Card to 7900 GTX

I have had my Sager 9750 for about 2 weeks now and I must say that I am completely impressed with the performance: FX-60 2Gb Ram 100Gb 7200rpm Go 7800 GTX . I noticed that Nvidia has just released the Go 7900 GTX 512mb video card. I have read about others upgrading their video card to the 7800 GTX, and I think it would be beneficial to have a thread about tackling new video card upgrades.
Issues like bios, power supply, drivers, installation, warranty, and where to buy would be good topics for pros to cover.
The upgradable video card was for me what really sold this laptop (DTR).

Anyone have power consumption stats for this card in comparison to 7800 Go? If it is substantially lower I would consider putting my 7800 gtx on ebay and make the upgrade, my batt life is crap as it is with 5720.

I totally agree with you,
This link below it to a thread that covers some potential issues with the 7900 GTX, and as per my request I hope hexum23 will get back to us when he gets his replacement card with POSITIVE results!

Mine is at Sager because the battery will not charge and I'm upgrading. Will let you know how it goes.

Awesome! OMG I really want to upgrade now! I just bought Condemned, and unless I have the resolution all the way down to 1024x768 and all the settings on Minimum, I can't play the freakin game every time I go into a room with overhead lighting it gets (SOO CHOPPY). Since I got the 9750 (Maxed Out) I've been underwhelmed Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 have a few choppy moments, but not as bad as this. I really HOPE its Just my 7800 gtx and not the FX-60 chip. I followed phoenix_06 "always on" Power advice and it's still slow I even clean installed win xp pro today after seeing how slow it was and STILL nothing

Sutter-
I RMA'd my 9750 because I had the same freezing problems. I think that it is the video card overheating (I can emliminate 95% if I use aggressive external coolers around the front where the card sits). I don't think it is our FX-60's. Yeah, I wasn't really expecting choppiness with a $3000 laptop. I'm going to wait for the Go 8800 GTX 512 DDR4 which I expect to be released in around 2 months. ATI just released the X1950 with DRR4, and nvidia plans to release the new DX10 cards with DDR4. You might see a more substantial increase if you wait for the 8800, or at least a possibly cheaper price on the 7900.

FYI- DDR4 runs 45% cooler supposidly.

What did Sager do when you RMD'd it? Did they swap out your 7800? I use this Antec cooler http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=75004 but it doesn't target the front left where the card is Which one do you have? Go 8800 GTX 512 DDR4 OMG that sould be SICK! I just don't know if I can wait thats sounds like it might be more than 2 months away.
Let me know if you had any success with the RMA. Good Luck'

The upgrade went very well! All is back to normal the machine blazes! I will play fear on it tonight!!! I won't have it much longer though, the machine is just too big and I'm going back to desktop gaming.

Hey WileCoyote
Sorry I didn't respond sooner I was out of town.
Glad to hear the upgrade went well, is there a huge difference between the gameplay on the 7900 vs. the 7800? Sorry to hear your getting rid of yours

Sutter-
I have two of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834996501
One blows under the laptop from the front under the V-Card, and the other is propped up and blows across the top of the keyboard, over where the video is. Finally, a third is similar to yours and sits under the entire laptop.

It is currently being worked on. Suprisingly, when I sent it in, the tech guy said he could not notice the video freezings, but he found one of the hard drives was bad, so he is replacing that. ????
I'll let you know how it all turns out in the end- I just want it fixed. The comment about the 8800 (I really hope) is because games like this:
http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?pa...=0&cId=3147944
will be released at the end of this year to support DX10.

My video stuttering is 100% fixed with external coolers. Could somebody who is planning to buy the 7900 GTX upgrade download and run the 3dMark06 demo before (with 7800) and then after (with 7900) so we can can a clear picture of the performance increase when using the same system?

Just curious, what is the form factor of this card? what are our upgrade options?
is it pretty much just 7800 adn 7900 GO or are there ATI solutions we can use as well?

So far Clevo and Sager have not supported any ATI cards. Don't worry though because the newly released X1900 seems to not be much better, if any, than even a Go 7800. See 3DMark 06 scores here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-...TX.2121.0.html As for upgrades, so far Sager is only supporting the 7800, 7900, and 7950. Anyone planning on getting a 7950 GTX upgrade? Last time I asked Sager they weren't selling them as upgrades but they said maybe in the future.
