I upgraded recently from a 6800 go to a geforce 7800 gtx go an my Clevo D900T (Revision 6, power supply 220W). The problem is that when i play a game or run 3d mark 05 after 10-15 minutes of playing vga jumps to 112c degrees and then it slows down to a horrible game performance. I check twice tha fan and cooling system but it looks fine. What can i do. I tried different drivers but the result is tha same. I am using Artic Cooling Silver 5 for better cooling performance...

A few of questions first.

Does this only occur when you are running 3DMark? That program is designed to test graphics cards hard and will cause just about any card to run hot. Also, the graphics tests will are so intense that just about any card will slow down and seem it is performing horribly.

Or does your card heat up and perform badly when playing other games (Oblivion aside)?

3dmark isn't that demanding at all, at least not temperature wise. and even though it would be, there is something seriously wrong with your cooling. are you familiar with using arctic ilver or was that your first time?

the layer must be pretty thin so that it barely covers the die.

What version of NVidia drivers are you using? You need to use drivers specifically designed and set up to handle the power saving feature of the mobile graphics card in your particular installation. I recommend downloading the drivers directly from Sager for this.

I'd say double check your cooling system, and is that AS5 applied properly?

I downloaded tha drivers directly from clevo website, i think is 83.20. The temperature problem occurs when i am playing games or running 3d mark especially when i play in native resolution (1680*1050). I double check cooling system and it seems fine.

does it "jump" to 112 or gradually rise?

a jump of 30-40 degrees could be an incorrect reading

Also, did you check for dust?

AS5 is a very good thing when applied properly and Your Worst Enemy if it is applied incorrectly. Suggest that you remove the AS5 that you have previously applied, clean all surfaces, and then reapply. REMEMBER a little AS5 goes a long way.

I guess TwilightVampire alluded to this earlier..... Suspect that your problem is too much of a good thing... Too Much AS5 = Hot and Erratic Behavior Patterns.... Not a good thing at all..

I used to have a small 1mm airpocket in my thermopatch on my x700. Temperature would go up to 120 degrees C. I fixed it and now it is around 85 when overclocked!
So Be careful with the AS or any patch you have in between GPU and the heatsink.

First of all thanks for tha help. I check again the AS5 but the result remains the same. Temperature in idle mode is 65c and when i run a game is growing fast and when it reach 112c card is slows down. Does sager recomends another c olling system for 7800gtx? I am asking this because i purchased this card directly form my customer representative and i am using the same cooling system that i was using when i had 6800 go. Also i would like to ask:

1) what is the maximum temperature that 7800 gtx holds?

2) Is there any way to change the maximum temperature that card slow down (threshold, now it is 115c) can i change this to 120c?

On my 9750 (Clevo D900K) I always switch fans to full speed when playing games. Otherwise it hangs after couple hours of gaming. The magic key combo is Fn-F2. Try it, it may work on D900T as well (I think it depends on BIOS revision).

Reapply the AS5 and install the cooler. This time take the cooler off right away without even firing up the machine and check to see if the is a perfect imprint of the core on the heatsink with AS5. If there is not a perfect square on the heatsink then you have a contact problem between the core and heatsink. I am guessing this is what the problem is.

And let the arctic silver set. meaning: as5 needs some time to reach its full capacity.also rub in some as5 in the chips die and in the cooler (to fill some micro gaps) then apply a very thin layer of as5 (the less the better, but it has to be enough to cover the whole die) also look at arctic coolings website for more information.

and don't try to change the threshold..
