Acer Aspire 5672 Review

This being my first review, it may not be the best.

Specs:

Intel Core Duo 1.66 Ghz
677 Mhz FSB
2 MB L2 Cache
15.4" WXGA LCD
ATI Radeon X1600 128 MB Dedicated (up to 512 HyperMemory)
1 GB DDR2 Dual Channel

My ratings:
0 - Worst up to 10 - Best

Value: 10 - Awesome package for the price.
Performance: 8.5 - Runs great, only seems to really slow down during periods of heavy rendering; Wireless works AWESOME!
Appearance: 8 - Keyboard is mushy, but not excessive; Case will flex is pressure is applied (quite a bit beind the LCD)
Weight: 9 - Awesome considering the features, thought not exactly 100% portable

Overall: 8.75; I'd buy another

For those of you with the X1400's it appears that the motherboard swap MAY be possible, I was able to remove the rear cover today at work (but I didn't have my camera with me) and it looks just like the X1400's internals from the photos that I saw

I ran 3DMark06 with a full test, but I don't feel the result were correct. My score was around 1300, but there had to have been something wrong. I'll run a full test later and post them.

As far as the heat goes, Sure it gets warm; nothing painful -- feels nice on the wrists and hands if you're in a cold room.

You can't hear the fan at all; there is only a slight push of warm air out the right side, it actually kind of worries me. I think my disc drive is excessively loud, but I'm not sure.

It doesn't say that it's a lightscribe drive, yet I have a lightscribe service preinstalled? hmm.. Odd.

This is a great bargin and I'd recommend it to others.

p.s. it Plays Cold Fear at full settings except medium to high shadows (instead of very high)

Hopefully, I'll be able to test Doom 3 later.

More to come.

Enjoy.

Omega Driver install procedure on my machine:
Used ATI uninstall utility in add/remove programs.
(this takes ages and disappears without letting you know its processing)
rebooted, checked that the Catalyst Control Centre was removed.
Installed omega drivers, making sure to follow advice off www.omegadrivers.net / reboot
Enjoy

Agreed on the pics! They would REALLY be appreciated.

BOFH- could you pass on the results of the call (if you don't mind). I too would be curious as to what they say about timeframe availabiltity.

Yes- score variation is quite common on all of the 3D Mark series. +/- 50 is generally something not to even give a second thought.

Both you and Filiab are getting scores much lower than i exepected. The x1600s should be in the 1600-2000 range, depending on clocks (both CPU and Video). Lvcien - do you have a compare link you could drop me?

Acutally, I just did I recovery on the machine -- so I'll have to re-run it. I'll do another benchmark tonight using 3dMark05.

What do you mean by compare link?

Thanks.

Hm.. so both the x1600 5672's are now in the 1200 range - sounds like Acer went a cheap way and downclocked the X1600 quite a bit. DO either of you have your clockspeeds on hand (As reported from 06)?

4700 on 3dmark 03 is tremendously low for a x1600. Even my crippled X700 gets 4400 but my low score is due to a CPU issue.

Damm, you better check your power settings and getting the lattest drivers. either your Card is severely underclocked or you might have cpu issues that runs games at batterly saving level. normal or usual core and memory clocks are in the 400-450mhz range for your card

You should get around 8k on 3dmark 03 and near 2000 on 3dmark06. about 3000-4000 range for 3dmark05

The 5672 with the x1600 in the USA has only got the x1600 with 128mb dedicated so will never work to it's potential. The 5672 with x1600 and 256mb is soon to be released.
