Any more info on this? Has anyone gotten higher scores?

The ASUS is looking more and more tempting to me, but I'm not sure about the warranty. I assume it'd be by whatever company put together the system for me on the S96J, and that could be a mess.

However, when I see the ASUS (not including OS) for only about $100 more, and the 1.8ghz processors and 256meg X1600s...

*Sigh*
choices choices.

I hear the S96J has very low, bad quality, audio through the speakers.
So... heat.. or bad audio

That is weird... you have a high core clock and a low memory clock, but still those scores are really wrong, specially after knowing your clock speeds.

perhaps its the cpu that is working on low clock speed, like when on battery.

Do you have Omega Drivers?

To be quite honest - I feel that 3D mark is quite off. My FPS in HL2 / CS S is 100+ when Im moving, with my team not underfire. and 70-80 in Heavy fire (All High settings no less)

Krista, i think the one with the X1600 is the way to go, but i find extremely weird the 3dmarks of this new lap with the x1600.

The Travelmate has CPU overheating issues, which cause drop of performance while gaming. that is the reason the travelmate has around 4400 3dmark03 instead of a 5k+ score. Of course im basing this on my personal experience, but i think everyone does have this, and is not that noticeable at first.

Considering he says he has over 100 fps on half life 2 normally and 70-80 on heavy fire, i do recommend it, even tho i dont know at wich settings he is playing (resolution).

If you want to consider another computer, i would recommend the Asus s96j, which is the one im gonna get soon. it has an Ati x1600 with 256mb, and overall scores near 4k on 3dmark05 and near 9k on 3dmark03.

Thanks. I think I would prefer the Asus but the cost is probably prohibitive (looking that up now). I can get the Acer with the X1600, 120gig HD and 1gig RAM for 1078 at buy.com right now. I think that price is incredible... but I wonder why it's so low. Makes me think there's something wrong

It's for model number:
LX.ATD05.014

Krista: I purchased mine from Buy.com and it was about 100$ more; Of course, that was right as it came out and now the costs of duo's are dropping so that could be reflect...

Look online, there is a 15$ off coupon floating around valid until the end of this month I believe.

Divine_Madcat: Any idea what could be holding back those scores? - thanks.

applezoo: I got the same error, just skipped it... no problems yet

Edit: I can play Doom 3 with Ultra High settings at 1024 x 768 with a steady 35~ FPS and it drops to about 20 - 25 if I run into a few enemies..

Krista, i think that even tho there is some problems with the scores he is getting, he seems to be able to game just fine. so i would say theAcer with x1600 is definetly better than the travelmate, and indeed its cheaper than an Asus.

The asus im configuring (Duo @1.83ghz, 60gb 7.2k rpm drive, 1 gb 667mhz ram and ati x1600 256@ 450/400 is about 1300+dlrs).

if the acer problem gets fixed, i might get this acer with the x1600 myself and save up the money for later. is the hdd 4200 or 5400? 4200 is a no no for me

Also, even if the memory is underclock, the scores are not right. I underlcocked my X700 from 358/330 to 358/300 (the standard for X700 is around 400/400) and then o/c my card to 400/350 and the overall score difference was not that great. the differeces was around 700 marks, but my main issue is not the card, its the CPU

basically, an x1600 with 370 memory and 470core should not score that low. the asus has a default 450/400 and scores 3900+ on 3dmark 05 so obviously reducing the mem to 370 would not make the score drop THAT much.

I'm using the standard ATI drivers; I'll try switching to the Omega drivers.

It's strange, I can run all games so far at full settings ... ie: Doom 3 with all full except medium shadows...

Is there anyways that the GPU could clock it's speeds up as needed in games?

LIke i said in the other thread - despite what one artifical bench says, you are still x2 the FPS of an equal x1400 5670, so i think think you have that much to be disappointed at.

Not to mention, i bet you have some overclocking head room, which will pull your 3D Mark score up as well.

It should be just like on the desktop; watch for artifacts and such, and watch the heat. That said, on the x1400 models, ONLY powerstrip 3.63 Build 540 worked to overclock the ram, so that will be worth looking for (i can send it to you if you cant find the links, but there should be some good ones floating around the forums).

3D Mark 06 is just much more sensitive to memory bandwidth than real games are. You can set performance profiles (using powerstip) for applications, but by default, the card holds the same clocks for everyhting.

Like i have been saying, don't let one artifical bench kill your enthousiasm. Your still 2x as fast as the x1400, so....

There is something weird going on with this card, I think there is some clocking issues here.... I'm able to run everygame I've thrown at it with full settings with shadows on some games reduced a level...

it's just really strange... I'm hoping I'll be able to get a copy of Doom 3 to test it out...

The game Condemned runs great on full maxed out settings
