I'm reading this thread with great interest as I'm about to buy a new laptop... I actually bought the 5672 with x1400 from a friend with a wholesale license two weeks ago but asked him to return it for me after learning about the x1600 model.
From what I read... am I correct in assuming the 5672 with x1600 (128) 1GigRam will still outperform the 5672 with x1400 (128) 2GigRam even with the heat issue and "underclocking" of the x1600? I did like the 5672 x1400 and it was in perfect condition for the 2 weeks that I had it... I hope the new computer won't be a lemon or have dead pixels. I've been reading the forms and shopping... is the 5672 x1600 (128) pretty much the best deal in the $1k to 1,500 range? What is that Asus S96J...? with T2400, x1600 (256) for $1300? I don't see that on Newegg... There is an iBuypower S96J... but for more $$. Thanks for the help and maybe this new Greece 5672 may have x1600 with 256mg? That would be sweet. Phil. |

The Acer 5672 with the x1600 should outperform its X1400 counterpart even with the 2gb of ram. its simply a better card no matter how you look at it.
The Asus s96j is indeed a great buy as well, however you need to configure it to match your needs, and overall its a little more expensive, but in my opinion, worth it. This Acer is going very cheaply on newegg, and a similar configuration for the s96j (without the OS, of course) is around 100-200 dlrs more. what i want to see if those 100-200dlrs the s96j is over the acer, are worth in performance or not. As for the omega drivers issue and no overclocking capability...i honestly dont know whats going on i have the lattest drivers and i reinstall to enable the O/C capability... weird.Someone said their performance went down when using the omega. Check if the omega have enabled any AA or AF, sometimes after installing the drivers those features get turned on automatically. when i installed the drivers, AF was set to 4x and AA to 2x. Anyone got a 3dmark05 on this Acer?

Thats a tremendously slow 3dmark05. i wonder what is holding back those scores? and it isnt the clock speeds, unless his x1600 is really different than the 5672 model with x1600 we see here.
Well, that is all i wanted to see. it is certainly stronger than my travelmate, but im gonna go for the Asus now. Thanks everyone for their imput and help. Oh and by the way im trying to undervolt this laptop of mine. any help with programs or tutorial. And also any help with programs to control the fan speeds of my machine would be helpful.

Walmart online has it for 1098 and you can pick up a 3 year extended for like 100 bucks more.. not a bad deal at all..but that 70C temps scare me off..even my 9880 does get that hot..

The 3DMark05 score is very low for the X1600. Maybe because of the 128MB the card has, but I'm not sure. Τhe core speed is good but the memory is low. In Tomshardware the Asus A7J with 1,83GHz,1GB DDR2,X1600 256DDR3 446/396 gets 3701 in 3dmark05.
Is there a reference for locked clock speeds in other graphic cards? Last edited by newlynx; 06-16-2006 at 02:00 PM. |

Actually i think the score is correct. overclocking should increase performance by a few hundred marks, if we find a way to overclock.
If you think about it, the range for the 256mb version with 450/400 and 1.83ghz processor is 3.9k reducing the cpu from 1.83ghz to 1.66ghz would make you loose abut 200 marks, or so. Reducing the vram in 3dmark actually makes you loose about 500-600marks, and finally, reducing the memory speed 30mhz should decrease the marks by another 100-200 marks. adding all those, it makes around 1k less 3dmarks than the 256mb, 1.83ghz and 450/400 clocks meaning the range should be 2.8 or 2.9k in 3dmark05. Now, im interested in 3dmark03, because some users reported 4.7k, which is pretty low there, against the almost 10k of other x1600 unlike the somewhat reasonable 3dmark05

My sister got hers yesterday. I'm going to call her again this evening and see how it's doing so far. She was happy with it then but hadn't been doing anything more strenuous than installing WoW and downloading the patches. I'll see how her heat issues are tonight.
Do you know if it's all right to convert to ntfs (C&D not the restore partition) before creating the restore CD? As to the ASUS. I still can't get it near the prices of the Acer... Though I can get it under 1000 without memory and HD. I think it might be worth an extra $150 or so for the better video card, 1.8 processors and lack of a heat problem though. Krista |

Hey Krista, i think its better to make the restore cds/dvds before changin to ntfs. im not sure if it would affect much, but its better to simply make the cds before doing anything.
restoring the machine to factory settings would make it fat32 anyways. depending on how much money i can gather in one month, its either this Acer or the Asus. i just want to know the 3dmark03 if its correct or not.

Krista let me know what you find out about the heat...Im looking to get rid of mine and go smaller..but I want a little bit of power..but not at the cost of over heating..70C isn't acceptable..my Sager only hits 60C when i've been doing hard gaming.. and I have a P4 chip..

now that i think about it, im only gonna have this new laptop for a year at most, so i figure that whichever i get (this Acer or the Asus) will be more than good enough till then.
3dmark05 altho a little low, it is still much better than my current laptop. not to mention it seems this laptop doesnt have overheating issues like my current travelmate does and the reason for this 5672 to have high temps of 70, is because its indeed very quiet. if fans were to kick in on higher, i suspect the temps would be much less, not to mention if you add AS5. who knows, i might get this laptop after all? i really want to see 3dmark03 of higher than 4.7k... so i wont regret my purchase. and we have to figure out how to overclock the machine, im sure we can easly squeeze a couple hundres marks, and a good amount of frames per second in games.
