HP dv2000t WinXP reinstallation guide.

GUIDE TO REFORMATING THE HP DV2000T

A guide, which is what I actually did in order to format my drive and reinstall Windows XP.

What u need is:

- A Windows XP installation disc (I used a Windows XP Professional SP2 ENG disc)
- BACKUP of your C:\SwSetup folder
- SATA driver (which I guess might be found in SwSetup or on Intels Website)
- nLite program (google.com)

So, heres what Ive done and what made my laptop work properly right now:

1. I burned the whole C:\SwSetup onto a DVD and backed it up in the LAN (to another CPU, a desktop one) - just in case anything happened to the DVD

2. I used nLite to slipstream SATA drivers onto my WinXP installation disc. The only options you need to check are: Integrate Drivers and Create Bootable ISO. When it prompts you which driver to choose, you basically have to choose the one looking like ICH7M or something like that. Then you create an ISO file and burn it using e.g. Nero.

3. I did not back anything else up, however if you feel like doing so, go ahead. As you all know, there are two types of people: the ones that are making backups and the ones that are going to.

4. I put the new WinXP disc in the drive and rebooted the unit. Windows installer has easily found my disc and asked what to do (meaning where to install it). When I was doing it for the first time, I left the HP_RECOVERY partition, but the second time I removed it anyway - its useless. Dont tuch the NTFS 1028MB partition which is Quickplay and which will prolly be useful. One more thing - create ONLY the system partition at this moment (prolly round 15GB), leave the rest unpartitioned so that quickplay installation may go rapidly.

5. Then I let the installer do what is supposed to, meaning install all that crap and so on. It managed, with no problems.

6. After the reboot, the almighty Windows came up. Heres where SwSetup folder comes in handy. You might either copy it at once to the drive, but I guess I would wait with that till everything works just in case you wont have to copy it again if something goes wrong and you want to repartition, reformat, whatever.

7. The first thing I instlled was Swsetup\QPW, which is the first part of QuickPlay. After thar, I installed SwSetup\HPQPDP thich is Direct Play part of QuickPlay. Thins one should create a whole partition and set everything up. It does take some time to do all of that, so be patient. After you install those two, I would shut the system down and try to load the QP using e.g. the DVD QuickPlay button on the notebook itself. If it does work (QP runs), then youre on good way.

8. After that run Windows again and install following directory contents (all from SwSetup):

- Video (GM950 drivers for me)
- WLAN2 (wireless lan adapter)
- NETWORK (only right click on the e100b325.inf file and run Install.. which will make it automatically work)
- Chipset (loads of intels chipset drivers)
- QLB (function buttons and quickplay buttons drivers)
- MISC2 (which is the Ricohs driver for the Media Card Reader)
- Touchpad (not really necessary, but useful)
- BTOOTH (if you do have BT)

9. Now the audio and modem are the tricky ones. You first need to run the setup from SwSetup\1UAA folder. Its some microsoft drivers or whateva. Then you need to go to Control Panel->System->Hardware tab->Device Manager and click on System Devices. A dropdown list prolly appeared and should have one PCI device something icon with an orange exclamation mark. Right click on it, check properties, then reinstall driver and then let windows look for it in the SwSetup\Audio directory. I should find it in no time. After that just run the Setup file, which should find, install drivers and activate audio in you notebook. The same thing should be done with the setup.exe file stored in SeSetup\modem folder.

10. And here you go, the notebook should be working properly, so does Quickplay and HPRECOVERY.

ATTENTION

1. Before installing HP, DO NOT TOUCH the quickplay buttons or you will have to reinstall the whole WinXP again. That is why I told you to install those drivers as the first thing you do after the reformat.

2. If you found that review helpful and you got a dv2000t and want to reformat it, and you would somehow like to say thanks, well.. If you could please upload me the WALLPAPER that came originally with the laptop (and I accidentaly lost it during the format), showing those "Waves" that the laptop has on the lid and an HP logo on it.

3. The unit after the format does actually run/boot up/whatever in a matter of seconds. It is truly remarkable and worth it all.

WEARENOTALONE: Thank you very much for all your help without your guidelines I would probably not have the balls to format it! As you can see, it worked so I owe you. Cheers and cu.

PS. Could any1 stick this one?

Glad to hear you're up and running.

See I told you it wasn't hard. One thing I would advise people to do is to download the latest drivers(SP's=Service Packs) from HP, Checking the version number against the files in the SwSetup folder... using the newest version and then once the base drivers are installed make a "restore" DVD with Arconis. Good thing about Arconis is you can make as many backups as needed... and of course create your "own" recovery partition on the hard disc as well.

I had an error appear when I tried to install the Direct Play of QuickPlay (SwSetup\HPQPDP). Here's the error:

Do you think you can help me as I would like to try to play QuickPlay without booting into Windows.

You may have a better response if you read thru /search and then post your concerns in the QuickPlay thread... and post the error code instead of a pic.

(I couldn't read the pic....)

Here'e the QP v2.0 thread. http://forum.notebookreview.com/show....php?p=1318531

Did you install the contents of the other QuickPlay folder from the SwSetup first? Its a must that you do. If you did, however - try checking whether there is only one partition on the disk before doing it.

PS. I have found the wallpapers. They are in SwSetup\BrandIt folder but thanks anyway

I did install the contents in the other folder but the error still comes up. I have also made a partition but I'm unsure of the size. How big does it have to be?

Unfortunately, I'm using QuickPlay 2.1 so I doubt that it will help me if I post there. I must also add that the installer for QuickPlay 2.1 is entirely different than QuickPlay 2.0. So partition size and installation process is different. Now, can someone help me with my problem?

What differances are you talking about?

You sure about that?

You sure you aren't thinking about QP 1.x being differant from QP v 2.x?

You mention Qp 2.1, the installer being differant...

I find that hard to believe since both are in the 2.xxx range.

I'd suggest you do an online chat wth HP.. give them your error code and see what they say.

I tried to install QuickPlay 2.0 on my notebook and it would not allow it to install. Apparently, it only allows QuickPlay 2.1 to install on the notebook. Inside the SWSETUP folder, there is the QuickPlay 2.1 installer so all you have to do is to double click it and it will install. It is as simple as that. Currently, only the Pavilion dv2000, dv5200 and the dv8300 has QuickPlay 2.1.

On the 2.0 machines the QuickPlay install disc the image is alittle of half a gig..

On 2.0 machnes There are two folders in the c:\SwSetup folder that reference QP.... one about 36mb, the other 6mb

500mb+ vs 36mb..... If the same is true for 2.1 I'm thinking the files in the SwSetup folder are missing something. I don't remember anyone being able to install QP from the SwSetup folder, hence all the clamor over people trying to snag a copy of the cd.

I know. But when I installed QuickPlay 2.1, all I had to do was press Next and it was done! I could launch QuickPlay 2.1 from the Windows desktop without any more hassle. It seems HP has listened to its customers and provided with an installer . Since you are getting a new dv8000 with the Nvidia GeForce Go 7600, I'm sure it has QuickPlay 2.1 on it.

Sounds good to me... Now if we can only get HP to install better GPU's.... one with a DVI output with HDCP so the unit can be hooked up to a HD Big screen TV, Plasma, Projector. Read a news brief that said the GeForce Go 7600 can do DVI+HDCP... outputing a HDMI signal so it could be hooked up... (DVI+HDCP=HDMI)

Check out this link everyone:

Getting back to QP 2.1

SO... does this mean that you got it installed? A couple of posts up you're talking about an error code. What did you do to get it to install?

PS: On that ERROR CODE...

Posting a picture is great, and I guess you could download it and zoom in to see the error code... But next time how about posting the code in the body of your post....

Two reasons:
1: It may help someone help you better.
2: It may help someone who is having the SAME problem, and is say going a search, via the search engine here... Or thru say GOOGLE.... Without that code in the BODY of the post.... they aren't going to find it.

Another consideration is someone who is reading thru this thread, or searching 6 months from now is probally going to get a DEAD link when they click, try to access the image.

Run accross it many times... Someone posts some info.... You search, find a little info, then the image that ties everything together isn't there.

If you could please take a monent to edit the post with the image with that error code. I didn't see it above.
Please take my comments in the spirt of making the posts, this thread useful to those that may be searching for info later...

Regards,

Nevermind, I managed to get it to install and it works perfectly . I just had to make sure that I had about exactly 1028 MB of unpartitioned space instead of 1000 MB. It took quite a lot of troubleshooting on my part but it works and it works perfectly . I hope this answers your question, WeAreNotAlone .

I completely formatted my computer, removed the D: partition after burning the Recovery Disks and it is running extremely fast compared with all the HP bloatware installed . I downloaded all the drivers on the HP Support Website and the only programs that I need on the SWSETUP folder are QPW which contains QuickPlay 2.1 and HPQPDP which includes the files to boot into QuickPlay 2.1 without accessing Windows. Other than that, you're all good to go .

I'm going to explore the SWSETUP folder and see what files do I really need and ones that can go into the Recycle Bin. I will try and update soon .
