Compaq v4000t ati x700 OVERHEATS!
Hey. I got a v4000t in Febuary, I installed an extra gig of ram and reformated. Updated all drivers, bios etc. Got ati tools to underclock the gpu...after 2 hours of playing WOW it became hot and turned off. This happes all the time, its anoying. I sent it out this week for service repair. Ill keep a post going on what comes from all this. I now know the laptop has poor ventilation and just cant handle the heat from the x700. I had it on a very good cool pad and it still over heats. Tride different ram...still over heats. So like i said this is

I have a dv4000 and when playing Tomb Raider Legend, the laptop turn off itself like 2 or 3 times per hour. I'm not sure if my X700 is overheating.
And today I was playing GRAW and my lappy turned off itself once. But I've played GRAW for hours and today was the first time it happened. I've also played NFS Most Wanted, Rainbow Six Lockdown, SimCity 4, Battlefield 2, Rome Total War, Call of Duty 2 and I haven't had any problems. Anyway, since HP removed the x700 option in these laptops, I'm kinda worried. Let us know what happens!

it sounds more like an issue of the gpu. i recommend
(a) running DXDiag to check through, (b) update to the latest ATI driver - stay away from ccc if u can and (c) reading http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_1.html this link provides an external tweak tool to the ati and makes good reference as well http://www.driverheaven.net/showthread.php?t=80292 i do notice that starting 6.3 ati creates heap of issues in some system. cheers ...

Ok, so I got it back. First to ghn, Ive done what you can...Ive underclocked the gpu, cpu....updated everything and it still overheated. So I got it back and on the little peice of paper it had a check mark next to the "Fan". I'm at work now, once im home ill load up WOW and see if its still overheating. Ill post again tonight or tomorrow and let you guys know the results.
ROUND 1: Sent out for server 6/12/06 - Recived 6/20/06 Stating the "Fan" was the issue. |

I have the black aluminum coolmaster notepall cooler i use. I'm telling you its a flaw in the designe of this notebook. I had problems in the first place from the original settings....so taking off the underclock wouldnt really matter. Also in the forums there is some people saying a breakin period for gpus etc....ive used it since febuary and the problem still persists....im loading halflife 2 on it and gona test it out, Ill post again while im at work tomorrow.

I owned a v4000t and had this exact problem. I ended up sending it in to service 3 seperate times before HP finally replaced it with a dv8000t which cools itself much better. The v4000t does not have an adequate cooling solution. I'm certain thats why they don't offer it with the x700 anymore.

Sent it out 3 times and have it in my office...it over heats on 3dmarks05 demo. I'm though with it, I wont ever buy a laptop for gaming again sadly unless i hear other wize from people that have 15.4" or smaller rigs and have played 12 hours straight on theirs with no overheating.

I wanted this for school, but also to game when I was at home. Just sitting up at the University listening to music and typing a paper causes it to over heat! My hands get all hot and sweaty. I don't even like to rest my hands on the keyboard because of how hot it gets. I have the 12 cell battery, so it is always "propped" up. I even keep a fan blowing on it. That doesn't really help, it'll still shut down during a movie or game. After seeing this post, I don't have much hope for mine now. I should have it back next Friday. We will see. I'm not expecting much now. |

I recently returned my Compaq v4000t with an x700 due to random shut down issues during game play. All I have to say is thank God for Costco they took it back with no questions asked. I ordered an Alienware m5550 in it's place, but I hear those have shutdown issues as well. I guess I am a glutton for punishment.

It only took 3 days to get my notebook back. It's still hot to the touch, but the cpu properly scales down when it gets too hot. How do I feel now? Eh. I wish it wasn't so hot to the touch, and this is probably be the last time I buy a compaq, no matter who the manufacturer is.

Sooo, I had to send it back in for the same thing. HP sends me my laptop saying they replaced the cpu. Okay, so I check it out and they replaced my pentium M 2.0 with a celeron M 1.6...
Give me a break HP. |

Just an update. I ended up getting back my notebook on Nov 29. The notebook was avg'ing 63 degrees C just surfing the internet with it propped up and a fan on it. After speaking with someone at HP online, I was transfered to a case manager. He said he wasn't sure why there were issues, perhaps the heatsink or the type of thermal paste they used. What he was going to do for me was get me a new cust configured unit. Everything would be the same, if not better for every part that you could customize. I am getting a dv6000t.
