Games for macbook

Got a new 2ghz Blackbook. Curious what games you guys have gotten to run nicely on it (either in XP or OSX). I installed Warcraft3 OSX side and it ran like crap. I assume because it's going through rosetta. I'm going to try it in XP but I'm curious what you guys have tried and gotten good performance on.

Pretty much everything will run gangbusters under Windows.

Most games for OS X don't have Universality yet so they won't run well. Games that do should run pretty good but because of OS X's implementation of Open GL games ported from Windows will never run as well without massive optimisation.

"Intel GMA 950 graphics 64MB"

This is not a gaming card at all....rosetta might have slowed your experience even more but even if you get it running in XP it's going to be just barely playable if not at all. This is just about the worst modern graphics solution with the only exception being...well...the Intel GMA 900 or some SiS solution that no one's heard of. It looks like if you want to do any kind of mobile 3d gaming on a mac you're going to need to get a macbook pro. I'm sure they could have squeezed in a go7400 for the amount of money that thing costs but hey this is apple. In order to put things in perspective: This card gets 10.6 FPS in Far Cry. at 800x600 (hiQ noAA noAF). For comparison the utterly outdated go6200 with 32mb vram scores 37.7 in the same test at anandtech. I understand your curiosity but I'm really not sure what games it could run....I've tried to justify ultraportables by telling myself I'd rebuy quake 3

Even though the 950 is not a great graphics solution, the MacBook will run some games. I've played Guild Wars (in Windows) quite nicely - getting 25+ FPS with settings on medium at 1280x800. I wouldn't buy a MacBook just for gaming, but it will work - particularly for some of the older generation games.

Duh, I didn't realise he was talking about the Intel iBook.

WarCraft 3 shouldn't have a problem running. I've heard people playing WoW on their Intel iBooks without many complaints.

WoW is universal. War3 is not.

I was thinking of it running under Windows.

Supposedly, however, Blizzard is going to release a UB of WC3...when, however, is the question.

Yeah. I discovered most games run much better in windows via boot camp. I can get almost every game I wanted to play just fine, even WoW and WC3.

There's videos floating around showing a macbook playing HL2 and COD2 as well. Don't misjudge Intel 950's performance

Well, the low resolution helps, as the card doesn't have to push as many pixels, but yeah, I'm beginning to see that the integrated graphics maybe aren't as bad as people have been saying they are. Of course, hardcore gamers won't be satisfied with it, but casual gamers mightn't mind.

Macs can be just as good at gaming as PCs, but all the games out for Macs were PC first and they're never optimised as well as they should be. Most of the time the game is just ported over directly with few optimisations if any at all. So it's no wonder games don't perform as well.

They need to release some Apple Intel processor graphics drivers. This will open up a wide range of good video cards for them to use.

I wasn't talking so much OSX as the hardware I guess given that you can install windows on the new Intel Mac's. The performance is suprisingly solid for a non-gaming machine.
