Updating 8890

Hey,

I have updated the DVD/CD-RW drive to a Pioneer DVR-K06 (120$) and now getting a second hard drive (good thing I bought a bracket when I first bought it)

That's the easy part...

Battery: has been dead (won't recharge) since the day I bought it plus 1 year and 1 day (ie:sucks to be me for not getting longer warranty). I heard the I could "revive" a dead battery by shorting out the terminals, then forcing it to recharge or something like that... anybody heard that ? Somehow revive an old battery ?

Video card artifacts: Cleaned the laptop everywhere I could unscrew something, artic silver on CPU etc... but where is the video card GPU ??? The pictures are gone from the review of the 8890 from Adam when it came out. My artifacts are that a shade of color is now green. Sometimes its pretty bad and almost all the colors are grren, sometimes its just a couple of colors. It's not a heat issue since its there from boot and shows up on the Windows bootup screen. I don't think its driver related since I see it during the windows installation and in DOS. Can I clean it, re-seat it in the motherboard, where is it? Can I get a new one ?

Thanks

Couple of banana dudes to calm me down...

Is the third fan, the one under the keyboard a fan for the chipset or the video GPU ???

Hi Marty, the directional fan under the keyboard is to cool the left RAM module (the metal plate under the keyboard heatsinks the right RAM module). As far as I know the 2 main fans cool everything else. If your video card is going bad (and it sounds as if it is) you need a MOBO replacement as they are one part. Good luck to you, take care, Andy
