I also have a S96J.
The grainyness on mine is not very pronounced, so I don't care. However, I started getting really BAD artifacting (shimmering red dots on any black surface). They are NOT related to heat. I can play games for hours without this appearing. It happens only on Windows desktop. Basically I was using it today and all black and dark blue elements started getting red dots shimmering all over. Closing and opening the lid "clears" them out momentarily but then they come back. I uninstalled Omega drivers for ATI, and with default windows drivers it was fine. I am now using the ATI drivers from Asus's support site (I must also comment on just how extremely slow all their driver mirrors are, unacceptable). I think the issue is fixed now. (I was using it to play Company of Heroes for a few hours and no issues, Windows desktop is also clean.) Either way I would appreciate an update on this BIOS problem. Edit: Nope, the problem came back. I may have to use my warranty on this, I am very very disappointed. The issue CAN NOT be captured on screenshot. i.e. If I take a screenshot it will not display. This grainyness issue affecting some of the ASUS notebooks scares the hell out of me.. considering the investment involved..

I'm hanging out for the release from ASUS preferably over the Intel support. Hopefully Ken is able to get back to us with news on progress soon.

so im guessing the bios that was released was a different one (i.e. not meant to address these issues)

Here is the BETA BIOS version 1101 for S96J/Z96J in Nero Image file:
1: Download NERO image files: http://1toppc.com/Merchant2/images/N...s/96J_1101.nrg 2: Use Nero to burn the image file to the CD 3: Insert CD and when first power on the laptop press "ESC" at Intel logo screen 4: Select Optical drive at boot options screen 5: at "A:\" prompt type "Update" and press "Enter". 6: it'll automatically update the BIOS and don't turn off or reset the computer during BIOS flash. 7: screen will go back to "A:\" prompt when finish 8: restart the computer and then hold F2 to enter BIOS, press F10 to save and exit BIOS. 9:Boot to Windows, it'll start to find all kinds of new hardwares. You might need to re-adjust the resolution and reinstall some of the drivers, so just insert the drivers disk and let windows automatically find the drivers. It's a beta so if you experience any problems that's normal and it'll be fix by the official release version, but I haven't see any problems yet. Last edited by GenTechPC; 09-25-2006 at 02:41 PM. |
