no, unfortunately
![]() I missed going to a lot of games this past year because UF sells tickets before the school year starts. Being my first year, I got the phone number to purchase them after the grad students, seniors, juniors, etc... Long story short, no football tickets But I was able to buy them off friends who couldn't make it to games, or in worse case scenarios, off of scalpers :P next year though, every last home game and every close away game, I will be at! Cool, man.... Football is unbelievable.... I LOVE IT! I go to LSU (as you can tell) and nothing tops a Saturday Night in Tiger Stadium... You ought to come down to Baton Rouge next season to catch a game in Death Valley... you'll never forget it! Our place rocks! The Swamp ain't bad either...

Agreed Football :headbang:
I think whoever said football was the bane of education just got beat up by the players 1 too many times. jk
I love watching football. Not much more exciting. Worst sport ever: cricket , curling , figure skating , golf . (although I love golf, and play often, it is an ACTIVITY, not a sport)Other activities called sports: hunting, eating (ever seen those competitions), lumberjack events (come on, sawing a log is not a sport???!!!!, and to a certain extent, baseball. Although again, I am a big fan. By the way, to you two college pigskin fans, sorry, but you gotta love them Buffaloes!!!! CU FOREVER! |

Sorry......
But anything that a beer swilling, mullet wearin hick like John Kruk can do is NOT a sport...
And he was not even a pitcher... Besides, name another sport where the defense has complete control of the game (or ball).... I once heard it stated that anything you could do while drinking a beer is not a sport. I thought that was pretty good. |

Sports:
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=sports Baseball: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=baseball Golf: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=golf Just so you know, I HATE sports. Not the actual sports themselves, I don't mind playing a good game of tennis, or golf, etc. They are fine. What I hate is the absolutely idiotic culture around it. Just so you know, this applies ESPECIALLY to the Ivy League, where, even upon much dedication, our teams are considered "a joke." So bear that in mind. I completely abhor when I have to WATCH sports. I mean, what the hell are you thinking? You are cheering on a team that (a) you are not in, (b) you will never be in, (c) you have no relation to, whatsoever. I mean, you like sports? Fine, go play them. Oh, but those stupid, stupid games! ARGH! Jay! Superbowl Sunday! Let's find the most boring thing to do in the history of humanity! Let's not move at all for hours, watch expensive ads, and pretend we play football! There, I had to get that out, and I know it won't go down well with some people, but I couldn't help myself. Skye, I agree with you whole-heartedly. A university is a place for learning and teaching. If anything, sports should be peripheral, and only important to those who PLAY them. Cheers.

you're missing it
Watching sports is analogous to watching a movie, or television show. You don't watch a movie because you starred in it, you watch a movie for entertainment.
Personally, I've never played football on a regulated team, but I've played tons of shirts/skins games with my buddies. As a consequence, I know how difficult it is to play. Watching on TV, seeing a quarterback leap over a defensive line that weighs a combined 1,000 pounds and land barely into the endzone, its exhilirating. I can't do anything like that. It's like watching a stuntman in a movie do some unbelieveably crazy act. And may I remind you that the first college football game EVER was between Rutgers and Princeton, two fine schools for the pursuit of higher education. ![]() My school, for example: Without football, my school would have to double the fees on EVERYTHING (tuition, housing, meals, etc) just to match its former income. Since I am putting myself through college, this is absolutely invaluable. Thank God for football! Brad ![]() edit: by the way Skye, I mentioned before that a University is a business. Not all football players get full rides and benefits, only the good ones; that encourages better players to go to the school, which makes the team better, which improves ticket sales, which means more money for the university, which means they can hire more and better professors, which makes the school better as a whole. BTW: full rides and special treatment doesn't happen just for football players :-P I am a National Merit Scholar; as a result, UF gives me tons of money and benefits. Study hard, or learn to play football ![]() Last edited by bradt; 02-27-2003 at 02:20 PM. |

Re: you're missing it

A movie or a television show can be one of these things, IF NOT MORE: a) Funny. b) Dramatic (as in Drama, meaning, suspense, etc.) c) Informative (as in, learning MORE than the resulting score of a game). If ANY show I watch, or movie, does not have at least one of those, I don't watch it, and it's crap. Some classical examples: Seinfeld - Funny. Law and Order - Dramatic. Discovery Channel - Informative. The Matrix - All of the Above. Granted, some shows do MORE, and try to "combine" genres, with the notorious "dramedia" being an example. This is fine too. Sometimes the results are good (Ed) sometimes they suck (The Tick). But there are always those elements present. Now, back to sports. I repeat my original feeling "what the hell are they thinking?" I mean, seriously, NOTHING happens other than a team edging out another, and viceversa. There's no adrenaline, as in REAL games, because you're not playing them. There's no humour, no drama, no information being learned, NOTHING. This is not against football, mind you. Tennis on TV? Shoot me, shoot me now. Golf? Pure torture. You see, it applies to all of them. Quote:
Cheers.

a) Team 1 wins. b) Team 2 wins. c) Tie. Sure, the scores can vary, but this is usually irrelevant [outside of betting and gambling, which is another little "virtue" of sports.] Quote:

But fine, if you like to do it, go ahead. However, this thread was about what we thought were BAD ideas, and well, I personally think that's a really bad one. Let's not get too carried away here. Cheers.
