This looks like a pretty good deal. What do you all think of this for basic use with occaisional light gaming (WoW). I'd recommend an addition more memory personally.

A couple of thoughts:

1: This unit looks pretty sweet for the money ($600- $640)... but has anyone seen anything like the above (business class HP machine) in the W I D E S C R E E N format?


I ask the above, because I'm looking for a laptop to tide me over for a while that's not a alot of $$$$... This model looks interesting.... (Although I'm really looking for something in the widescreen format... and has to have a DVD burner, Dual layer...)

Picked up a Acer 4062WLMi (LX.TAK05.301) the other day from SamsClub for $571.71

While the above is "ok", battery life is only around 2 hours with stock battery (2000mh), there is a 4000mh battery...

GPU is VERY weak, bought the unit while getting "milk, bread".. since it was on markdown, didn't have time to research the specs on the unit... So I am interested in a model like linked to above.

Would prefer a unit with a better GPU... one that has better battery life... Was impressed with the screen on the ACER.


Think the business line of HP's have a magnesium alloy case/re-inforcement... ACER case of course being plastic, and has allot of flex to it..


If ANYONE knows of any "deals" out there, please speak up... While "new" is prefered, Refurb is ok...

Really impressive notebook. Over 4 hours batterylife is impressing considering its an AMD and the battery aint the biggest either. Here is another good review: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1982989,00.asp Tobad it only has 512 ram and the gfx steals 128 on top of that, if you put in another 1024 ram it sure would be much better probably getting a more normal mobilemark-score.

On that review, Great link and all, had some good info, but that review is not for the AMD Mobile Sempron 3400+ cpu'd machine @ $500-$630.... It's for the much more expensive model running $1,186- $1,286. For that kind of money I'd probably go with something else.

I'm still left wondering just how the AMD Mobile Sempron 3400+ cpu'd unit would compare to other recent cpu's. In other words, why so cheap, what's wrong with it. just how "bad" a AMD Mobile Sempron 3400+ cp'd unit would be...


Haven't found much info on the AMD Mobile Sempron 3400+ ... a chart or something that lists cpu's over the last few years..

In Norway where I live the tested modell costs 730 USD so its actually really cheap A friend of mine just ordered one.

The cheap price is due to the fact that Sempron has a limited L2 cache (128-256 KB depends on the model), that greatly reduce's the price since cache memory is very expensive (since more transistors are required on-die). The Sempron 3400+ has a die size of 84mm2, produced on AMD's 90-nanometer silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process.

Sempron is somehow similar to Intel's Celeron D processor, but outperforms it in every way, especially in games, also it provides 64-bit and SSE3 support. But falls behind when compared to Athlon 64 3400+ in every single test.

I didnt found any releated info on swapping the CPU on the particular model, but mostly swapping a CPU in a laptop takes only a few minutes (unlike MXM gfx cards ) , considering the compatibility issues and TDP are resolved.

In your socket you could fit any of the following AMD Turion X2 processors ranging from Turion 64 X2 TL-50 - Turion 64 X2 TL-60. TL- 52-60 models have double the L2 cache of the TL-50 and TDP are somehow near 30-35 (differs by model) . With artic silver thermal paste or a better one you could narrow the gap from your Sempron TDP, in any case i dont think you will face any overheating problem, if any you could try undervolting the Turion which comes at 1.10 V.

Last thing you want to check is for a new bios update if needed.

Thanks for the info... haven't keep up on the various AMD cpu offerings out there... Will do a cpu upgrade at some point weighing the cost /benfit ratio...

And I'm still waiting for my model to appear on HP Partsurfer http://www.partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main so I can compare /verify the same motherboard, and heat sink /heat pipe is used.

I'm thinking they use the same (more cost effective, less parts to stock)
