AbF:
I did just that (Ubuntu+Automatix) 2 days ago and for some reason I could not watch my Truimph Comic Insult Dog DVD it was overrunning the video buffer. Then I installed Linux Mint 2.0 and it ran fine. Something with Automatix and Edgy I think. Alex |

Yea I am not gonna use Edgy myself, I will wait till the next version possibly and give it another shot. For most people Dapper should work fine for them, though I am severely tempted to run ELive on some of these computers in this lab I am currently sitting in

This distro looks interesting, but I really don't like the fact that they aren't sticking with one desktop manager. They seem to flip-flop between releases.
I also think automatix kinda makes a distro like this pretty irrelevant. I have not had any major issues with Edgy yet, I'm suprised so many people are not happy with it. Everything, including beryl, works fine on the old machine that I configured it on. I have to say, the more I use elive, the more I want to get ubuntu back on my machine. E17 has some really nice advantages (speed for one), but lacks in so many areas. The file managers are pathetic, the elive panel is the most poorly configured panel ever, Editing features is completely illogical, adding menu items is a pain and basic configurations are tedious at best. The E17 team really needs a good UI designer to fix some of these things. All this stuff is fixable so I'm going to be optimistic. I think I might try Arch before I put ubuntu back on my desktop machine. -BT

Or you can create the .desktop file from what used to be the eap editor I believe, though I tended to do it by hand just for speed. Seablade This actually makes it sound more complicated than it is... Going to be working on a possible drupal setup to replace the Wiki Iw as working on sometime back for linux info, will put up some basic tutorials on how to do this when I get it up I suppose, though I am not moving to fast on that. |

I would have gone with Elive but it refuses to see my ATAPI or USB CDROM on my notebook (Asus A8JS).

BT...i think the "troubles" you're describing are really to be attributed to all minimalistic WMs including IceWM and Fluxbox (and to some degree XFCE...lets not forget Thunar which you called pathetic is an XFCE project). With minimalism you can't have your cake and eat it too, some features have to be sacrificed in order to improve resource usage and real time performance. When comparing E17 + Thunar to Gnome 2.16.1 + Nautilus 2.16.1, it seems a bit pathetic, its like comparing a Town Car to an Elise (one has every option but the kitchen sink but sluggish performance, the other doesn't even have cupholders but really knows how to fly)

Actually ABF, other than possibly the file manager(Though that isn't really e17 either) the majority of what he has described is all fixed and done in e17 as of a good while ago. Ill take some screenshots after I rebuild to show you what I am talking about.
