Cool Overclock D600 1.6G to 2.13G (hardware modification with photos)

I knew there is a soft way to do so, but I really like to find out another way Now come with me, I'd like to share my experience with all you guys.

This is hardware modification! You play this on your own risk!

The most headache is that the position of PLL IC is different from most others(such as IBM,HP), because it's on the backside of the mainboard. That is to say, you have to dismantle it completely. In my opinion, CPU is easy to be overclocked. The importance is whether your memoty module can support 33% overclock or not. In other words, your memory module will work on 333*1.3=443 MHz after overclocking if you use DDR 333 alone. So I mix a DDR266 and a DDR333, in this case all modules only need to work on 266 x 1.3=354 MHz. It plays a crucial role in the process of overclock.

shame... they put PLL IC on the backside

according to Pin Configuration of CY28346, let A (pin 55) & B connect with a 1k resistor so that A can get a High Potential (just like C & D)

I tested my D600, and it has worked stablely by now
LOL god damn, i855PM works on FSB 533MHz!

on full speed:

on 800MHz with speed step:

DDR status:

Super PI 1M calculation

Have fun, dell fans

Good work! You may want to put the images up as thumbnails though, even my cable connection was chugging to load the thread, poor dial-up users will be pulling out their hair.

Works on 600m's too.

Nice work, this also works on my older DELL 600m with a 1.4 Ghz Banias chip. The O/C pushes it to 1.87Ghz . I will give it a good stress test and then do the other one as well.

I do appreciate the good pictures even though they do take a while to load .

Thanks for the mod.

sounds good. insp8600 uses same PLL, but looks like a different board layout from the (small) images i can find...does anyone have decent quality pics of the PLL on the 8600 with those 4 pins in shot?

for example - cant see it in the same place on this image and i cant go tearing my 8600 apart just yet as i am using it for work!

also, the memory speed - would it be possible to run pc3200 400mhz sodimms ie. would the board run them at 333mhz before overclock and as such would they be able to handle the "proper" overclocked memory speed of 443mhz?

also, what does this do to the agp/pci clock speeds?

On my 600m the agp speeds stay the same with the overclock as without as the only thing that is being changed is the FSB. I also found that with my 600m being one of the older motherboards (1 gigabit lan and memory limited to 266mhz) that I had to use 333mhz ram to get it to overclock stable with the ram at 354mhz. With the DDR266 ram it would BSD after a few minutes.

I have also been using RMclock to undervolt the CPU at the same time.

good news on the agp speed lol
also good news on the memory i reckon, with the 8600 board limited to 333mhz, pc3200 should run at 433mhz (in theory, i currently o/c my pc2700 to 360mhz and its perfectly stable)

Memory is the first priority issue !
^___^
It works if your DDR266 can run at 353 CL 2.5;3;3;6 !
My D600 can get CPUMARK 259 !!

My Thermal system may have problems
In XP Idle 1.35V 2133mhz => 65 C , 4000RPM FAN
In Full loading 1.35V 2133 mhz=> 90C, 4000RPM FAN .

If apply 1V 800MHZ, 2000RPM FAN can drop to 47C .

thats a bit hot lol
anyone's systems still running fine with this mod?

also, i can see where to connect the resistor on the track from pin55, but where exactly is the top solder for the resistor to be made? is it to the track going from pin54 to C?

I use a piece of solder and Wild_Glue to make it.
I connect C and C_ (the point just below C).
hot_gun or 1K resister not needed.

Mine is still running fine, I should mention that it is using an older banias 1.4 Ghz cpu though. The temps are only up around 3 degrees or so over the original clock.
90 degrees sounds way to high for any cpu.

I have also tried two different 1 gig ram sticks but none of them will boot sucessfully with the overclock. I have just brought another 512 meg stick so that it will at least have 1 gig ram with a healthy overclock .

Hello sir,
You need a pure DDR266 module! It will force your DDR333 1G module running well at DDR353 !
At that time, the DDR 266 will running DDR 353 too.
Please REF the top segment of top post.
My DDR333 256+ DDR 333 512 works bad before. but DDR266 256+ DDR333 512 works fine!

(RAM SPD do not has config which higher than 133/266MHZ ! CL 2.5_3_3_6 or 2.5_3_3_7 )

My Thermal heat pipe should broken(DELL's Problem). Fan wind did not so hot even CPU get 90C degree .
So, I'm using RightMark CPU utility now. It's a good software!

Ok thanks for that, it works with a 256 DDR266 +1024 DDR 333,
the crazy thing is that mine will also run well with a 256 DDR333 + 512 DDR333 in there with CPU-Z stating that they are running at DDR354.
My 600m's are both older style motherboards that will not normally run at DDR333 anyhow.

It will post but then bluescreens with a 256 DDR333 + 1024 DDR333 in there ???

CPU-Z states that with the 256 DDR266 and 1024 DDR333 in there that both sticks are running at DDR354

The fun of overclocking eh

Great mod though

The firt Segment in first post already told us: If you apply all DDR333, it will running 333*1.3= 443 MHz(both module) , It's almost impossible. ^__^;;
If you mix any DDR266, It will works fine (both module will down to DDR 353)!
The CPU-Z detect a wrong speed.. Orz .The CPU-Z detect a wrong speed.. Orz .The CPU-Z detect a wrong speed.. Orz .

Cheers !

My mistake then, but my motherboards will not run a DDR333 sitck as DDR333, it will only run at DDR266 regardless.

The issue is that with the overclock the ram is running at 177Mhz, this is slightly faster than the 166Mhz that DDR333 is designed to run at. The 512 DDR333 stick I have will run fine at 177Mhz but the 1024 DDR333 stick cannot handle the (small) overclock.

Cheers.

has anyone tried using only pc3200 (400mhz) memory?
on the standard system they should revert to 333mhz, and, on overclock, should handle the 'true' overclocked speed of 443mhz which would be a bonus.
