Pretty crazy, huh? Of course, it really isn't all that portable, but still cool! So do y'all think fuel cells will replace current laptop batteries in the future?

not any sooner than the end '08 if the dock comes out in late 07. first there will be these docks or perhaps some type of secondary portable power source.... but not actually integrated into the laptop. once they get the safety standards and all, we might start seeing these things appear in the larger (17"+) DTR setups...probably yielding 10 hours of battery and hopefully none of the exploding dell effects. at which point they will be reduced in size and weight and will make their way to mainstream 15 and 14" models by 09...maybe even 2010...at which point they will still be around 8 to 10 hours.... hell...anything is better than the 1.5 hours i am getting off my uniwill right now.

SONY had the problem Not Dell is was SONY Batteries.

To the OP I'm not a fan of Fuel cells in portable products for the simple fact that they get abused way to much if one of thies starts leaking on an Airplane that is the end of Laptops on flights for good. People are to stupid to be trusted with what amounts to a small bomb being carried around with them were ever they go.

as has been pointed out a fuel cell amounts to the rough equal of a small bomb. the fuel within the cell is not very stable at all and the risks of explosion are huge. also i can see the fuel cell laptops never being allowed on flights. no airport security in the world would be so stupid as to let someone onboard with something of that nature. it wont take one leaking until its banned, i am pretty sure the ban on fuel cell powered laptops on planes will happen long before that.

that alone will kill their popularity in most everything beyond the niche market that serves people on things like expeditions who have zero access to other sources of power.

I'm sure if they can produce them then they can design them to be safe too. For example, what might work is a tamper proof barrier around the chemical parts of the cell, and then a buffer layer with neutralizing elements to encase it inside of the battery shell. If there is internal rupture, it is contained and neutralized... and if it is forcefully ruptured, then a sensor will activate alarms and the thing will arm itself and discreetly walk it's way out the back door with it's assaulter in handcuffs....
