about the cds that come with this thing.... what comes with it?, i see they charge $40 for the respawn cd.. what is that exactly? do you get a windows cd or not? i really hate that you have to pay for that whereas other providers don't charge for that....
how thick is the laptop with the lid down? i hate thick looking laptops.... i'm about to buy this thing, would you recomend it ? thanks, |

The unit comes with oem Vista cd's for a base installation. The respawn cd is a ghost image using Symantec's Ghost utility. With the respawn cd, they image the machine immediately before shipping so that if you recover with the respawn image you're right back to exactly the way the machine arrived. With the oem Vista cd's you are doing a completely clean installation.
It is not very thick, in my opinion, a little over 1.5 inches. Certainly not thick for what you're getting in it. " i'm about to buy this thing, would you recomend it ? " I absolutely love this notebook. I would recommend this as a wonderful multi-purpose notebook with enough power to run games very, very well. Is it the right notebook for you? Well, that depends on what you want to do to a large extent, but I do think this is a wonderful notebook.

thanks for the response....
what i'm trying to undersatnd is if i get this without the $4o respawn cd, will i get my copy of vista? or is that part of the respawn cd? i'm trying to save as much as i can ... another issue, i already have two sticks of 1gb notebook 667 memory at home, i was wondering if the two memory slots are accessable from the bottom, or will i have to take the laptop apart to change one of them? this is going to be used for graphic work and design,,,,, plus i just need a powerfull laptop for day to day multimedia ...... |

Alienware notebooks come with a Windows Operating System CD (it's an OEM version, so the license is just for the computer it came with).
Respawn is an option ... it's just a "ghost" image of your system that lets you reload the factory settings. If you don't want to spend the $40, you can accomplish the same thing using a free app like Acronis True Image. The tech specs for the m5790 list it as being 1.66" thick. For comparison purposes, the Dell 1710 is listed at 1.69" thick . Not much difference, but from the pictures I've seen, the M5790 looks a bit thinner ... perhaps one of the owners can tell us what the measurements are at the edges, which don't seem to be as thick as the back part of the notebook. EDIT: oops, didn't see Low Ki's response on page 2 before I posted. |

The Respawn is just an option. Its an image of your hard drive as it was before it left the factory... it allows a 30-45min recovery if you have issues... as opposed to about a 1 hour to 1 hour and a half OEM restore. The Respawn also makes it nice because all the hardware drivers will be installed and everything is good to go. The OEM restore will require driver installs, windows updates, etc. No matter what, you get your OEM DVD.

Just as an update I have installed 2GB of G-Skill to replace the default 1GB. Performance in Vista is much crisper and the system overall feels much more responsive. BF2 runs fabulously now and is much smoother with a lot less frame variance. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. runs very well as does COD2, SWG, BF2142 and anything else I've thrown at this system.

Awesome, awesome review, very clean and informative. I'm hoping on getting one of these lovely lappys in a month or two when I raise the cash, but until then, these pics and the whole review will help hold me over!
One request... I'm on a system with Vista now, no games or anything, but could you perhaps go into more detail as to the problems you have encountered with it? Or at least the small grievances? (Seems pretty nice on the computer I'm on, and it's a pretty so-so comp.) Thanks for any responses. |

Nice review. That is one sleek looking laptop. I know how you feel on the quality of the laptop, seems the M5790 has the same chasis as the Superman laptops and it is great. Enjoy buddy.

Just a quick update, after installing the DH Mobility Modder from http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/ and installing the current ATI drivers (8.380.0.0) I was able to get my 3dmark05 score above 7000.
I've had this baby for a few months now and still am absolutely thrilled with it. gg AW.
