Question about Ubuntu "upgrade"
So im running Ubuntu edgy right now, and i am wondering how the upgrade works to feisty. Is it like a MS upgrade where all your data stays in place and the OS is just upgraded? Or is it just so you dont have to download the ISO?
Its not like i have a lot of stuff on here, but i would just like some clarification before i do this as to what will happen. Thanks for any info! |

Your data should stay in place. As long as it stays in your home folder you should be fine. I would still backup critical data. What may happen is that some of your configs may be overwritten. My hosts file was overwritten and my apache configs were also replaced. If you have databases I would also back them up.
I would also edit your xorg.conf and use a generic video driver (nv, ati, vga) in the event the graphic drivers break. I would also remove compiz/beryl from autostarting. Once upgrade is done and everything is back in place, get those things running again.

bt is on the right track. also as per upgrade through apt or install from scratch...that really depends. if your edgy has gotten messy (as has my dapper when i upped to edgy) then in the end you will end up with a ed-stey mutant clone...so in that case you're better off installing from iso (as i did to upgrade my dap-gy mutant clone to feisty), however if your install is reasonably clean, than an update from apt should work just fine. expect minor brakes in the system which should be easily fixable.

Alright thanks for the info guys. I just have one more question about the boot loader, in edgy its Grub right? It pop's up with a list of options (since i dual boot win xp) and different kernals i have installed. When i had Feisty installed on a spare laptop it has a totally different boot loader, or else it just looked different since i was not dual booting. As for my install, i dont to my knowledge have any special video drivers installed since i just have an intel graphics card in my laptop, nor do i have compiz or beryl. I also have not done any much editing of anything to tell you the truth in my install so that should not be a problem. Ill make sure everything is in my home folder. Thanks again for the info guys! |
