Specifications
fan noise on 1712
Hi,
I have the 1711 here and the 1712. With the 1711 the fan does not run when surfing, typing etc. - but with the 1712 you can hear the fan all the time. Not as loud as with the 1711 when running a benchmark, but the fan is running. With the 1711 I could hear the hard disc spinning up and down - so quiet was the system. Is this the graphic card or the faster CPU? I was really impressed with the 1711, because it runs without any noise during normal operation. I wanted to exchange with the 1712, because of the better graphic power of the 1712 - but the fan is not so nice. So I have to decide to go with the 1711 and no noise or with the 1712 and noise. What is your experience with the 1712 - can you hear the fan during normal operation (=idle in Windows)? Maybe mine has a problem? Marcus |

Thanks for the info samendolaro. That's disappointing to hear. I'm in the same boat. 2 weeks and then I'm moving on to the HP zd7000.

Acer is not exactly user friendly these days...
Its a shame the laptop is great... But the pausing is just too bad ( It just paused while writing this ). I was in Atlanta on monday doing a presentation and I was hitting my usb clicker to advance the slides in powerpoint... Nothing happend.. Click again... all of a sudden I am two slides ahead...caching my clicks while the drive spun up (or down) too much of a hassel. My first choice was the ZD7000 but it seems that the GPU gets very hot in there and is defaulted to a 300 clock. I may just return this next week and wait until this is fixed then pick it up again ( damn this drive is going nuts... Suun down 3 times while writing this email I need to initiate a download just to email <Grin> ) I wanted the best work/play but at this point it is neither. What happened to Bios within a week ???? I think Acer may have found a problem that can not be fixed by hardware.. Is there a way jumper the HD to not allow it to power down ? Are you able to even see a support site for the 1710 ? Nothing is listed on their site under support. I upgraded my Home to Pro and lost my On-Screen volume display. Any Idea how to get that back ? Last edited by samendolaro; 04-22-2004 at 11:20 PM. |

Acersupport america is really the worst. I found a lot more stuff on the Europe site. But nothing for us yet. The link is http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.html.
I bet we see it here first if we see it at all. And I'm 90% sure it's the BIOS. If you run Sandra you'll see that the power management options for the HDD are enabled in the BIOS. Last edited by ransaak; 04-23-2004 at 12:27 AM. |

samendolaro, control panel, sound and audio devices, open that and under the first tab is a box for putting volume on the task bar. That should help you out.

I have my volume on the taskbar but with the default setup I had those nice green bar overlays on the screen which showed the volume and while in an app it would show a smaller version on the screen. (Showing the percentage of volume). The volume buttons still change the volume but I no longer get the graphical diaplays..

Is the Bois update releated to the fans being on all the time too?
Maybe the fans need to be on, have you tested the temperature of the processor? Maybe because they are desktop components their hot all the time, hence the fan is on. Why would you not want the harddrive to stay on all the time, don't desktops/notebooks regulate their hardrive spin downs? ![]() |

Sorry,
I have discovered late that the cpu used in 1712 and 1714 is a Prescott, and I have readed that it is very very hot compared to Northwood. I am thinking to buy the 3.4 Ghz and it is described like a cpu that in a full opened case of a desktop reach the 78 degrees Celsius in maximum load. What the hell can happen using it inside the very little space of the Acer ?? And the fans will be 100 % maximum speed all the time the note is on ??? Can you tell me your cpu temp under idle and at 100 % of usage ? Thanks !!! |

48C for me idle. 55C after a 6-8 hrs of gaming. The one thing this beast doesn't have is heating issues.
