Looks exactly the same... But no pausing... I'll need to try a game when I get home . But I can actually work in Excel now...

Oh boy, oh boy! Please keep the updates coming. I've been waiting to see if they would fix this issue. I don't suppose you have Farcry do you? I'd like to see what the Acer does with that. If wishes were fishes I'd get it with the ATI 9700...

If anyone has their hands on this BIOS, please email it to me and I will give you my first born son.

If you look in the revision history, they disabled the S.M.A.R.T feature .

That was the bugger

I put it up on my server for those that need it. If this is illegal, immoral, or just not a good idea for any reason I may be overlooking... let me know and I'll take it down.

Download and use at your own risk.

Yes, the new BIOS works great. The version originally on my system was 3A14 and the newest version as of 4/26 is 3A19. It is stated as an official release in the revision history so I doubt there would be any problems for anyone.

For DWStrickland

Hi,

I am very near to buy a 1714Smi + 250GB hd like your but I have yet some things not very clear, can you help me :

- In the revision history of the bios is written that when the cpu temp is greater than 70 degrees Celsius, it is forced to slow of about a 33 % in speed.

I have readed in many places that the Prescott cpu is very very very very very HOT and that with some work, it reach easy very high temperatures.

My questions are :

Under stress conditions (like gaming or others intensive applications) how much is the temp of your cpu in Celsius ???

If is very simple that the cpu goes over the 70 C limit, it will forced down the clock by the bios very often to work at 2/3 the nominal speed.
So my bad thinking is "if I buy a 3.4 Ghz Prescott 1714, it will run every time at 2.27 Ghz real for cause of temperature ??????"

Only you can resolve my problem, is it true in your machine or the temp is above 70 C in every situation ???

Thanks a lot.

Use WinFlash to update the Bios

I just updated the Bios with WinFlash, which you can find here:

ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/note...ire_1700/bios/

(Do not use the Bios on this site, because they are for the 1700 series in Europe and not for the 171x - but the WinFlash works on the 1712 - at least on mine )

I played for about 4 hrs last night and and the machine never got over 62C.
It really doesn't get very hot. There's a lot of space in this huge case. Normal operation runs at about 49C-55C.
